Title: Car Allmost Stalls
Post by: SpeedDemon on October 04, 2004, 08:26:01 PM
Heres the thing I've been trouble shooting my TGP for about 3 weeks because of bad idle and stalling problems. I have cleaned out the intake manifold and thottle plate (no longer black), checked the EGR valve (and cleaned it), checked the fuel pressure (perfect), changed the vacuum modulator (fixed the idle problem). I do still have the stock crossover pipe on the exhaust but it seems to be in good condition still. But the car still stalls when I stop :bad-words: . What do you guys think that could be causing the car to stall? I'm all out of ideas and the last think I want to do is spend $70 to take my car to the dealership to see what the problem is.

Do you have Top Gun chip from Jeff M? Jeff M cross-over? 8)

NO I don't because I was more interested in fixing everything that needs to be fixed on the car first (like brakes, get the proper tires, fix the oil leak. that kind of stuff) before I started buying aftermarket stuff like that. But I will be getting ready to get them as soon as I fix those problems. and I know that everyone says that the crossovers go bad but It doesn't seem to be bad (no cracking on pipe or exhaust smell under the hood).

By the way what are the prices for the TG 160 chip and the cross-over pipe?

I did fix the Idle problem. SO IF YOU HAVE AN IDLE ISSUE DON'T GO AND JUST BUY STUFF PLEASE. Hear this from a mechanics point of view. If something is wrong with your car it is usually "USUALLY" something small and stupid (you know something that you would never think was wrong).  :bad-words:

I spent no money for a chip or a cross-over pipe. I took the thottle body off and look at the vacuum ports on the top. And to my suprise the entire thing was filled with CARBON. So I spent 3 bucks and bought a can of throttle body and intake manifold cleaner and sprayed it out. I also sprayed out the AIC valve because it had carbon build up in it too.

I put it back on and the CAR IDLED GREAT. So for all you guys out there that have stalling problems please check the vacuum ports on the top of the throttle body. And don't go and spend 300 dollars on a part that you don't need yet. (I said NOT YET. not that you don't need the chip or the crossover they will make an improvement)

You will mostlikely still have idling problems.  It might not stall as often, but I would bet it will still stall, or almost stall alot.  My car wouldn't even idle without my foot on the gas, and putting a TopGun chip in it fixed EVERY driveabillity problem I was having with it.  Believe me, the chip will make a huge difference...not just in performance, thats just an added benefit.

it doesn't stall at all any more but then again I really have no clue who owned the car before me ( I also did a complete topend cleaning too. The upper and lower intake manifolds looked perfect when I put it back together). the only thing I know is that the car runs perfect it's not my race car (that title is reserved for my 1967 plymouth that is getting completely redone this winter  ) Its my daily driver. How can you tell if the car already has a chip in it (the car is over boosting don't know if the gauge is wrong, chipped,  or that the it is really running the higher boost)

If you're going by the gauge on the dash...the gauge is wrong.  On 10psi mine is pegged.  None of them are accurate.  The only reliable way to tell how much boost it is getting is with an aftermarket boost gauge.  If the car has a chip the chip will say topgun right on it.  It also should have a colder thermostat, so it should run really cold. (mine & my dads both run at the first line above 100 on the dash)  The chip isn't just for increased performance, that is an added benefit, and you don't even have to get the performance chip if you don't want to drop the $.  It has much better fuel & timing tables, and your gas mileage will go up with the chip.  Not only that, but it raises the idle so it will idle a lot better (even though you think it idles fine now).  Believe me, it makes a huge difference.

I understand its not you're race car, I'm just telling you it will make you appreciate the car a lot better.  My dad has a chip in his TGP...and its his winter beater.
