I can get my hands on a 1990 TGP for 1,500... no rust only 2 problems are the master Cylinder and the turbo doesnt kick in and other than that nothing esle it wrong.... so a good other question is if it is worth it... will it hard to fix those 2 problems (Master Cylinders pumping more brake fluid than its sopposed to so its hard to press on brake) and the Turbo I dont know what esle is wrong with that... and if this is all worth it and way you think I can sell it for more that 1,500 by fixing it?
Thanks for your help!
the master cylinder is around $700 new and I think the going rate on the turbo rebuilds are $350ish. You can put vaccum brakes into it by swapping out all the ABS crap with a master cylinder, booster, lines, etc etc from a non ABS car from 88-93 w-bodys.
A lot of $ and time, well worth it.
well it has 115000 miles on it and some people are telling me it can the master cylinder can be fixed instend of replacing um... better question.... im more it to making cash off this car... think its possible to fix those 2 parts and make any money off it?
ive been trying 2 sell my project TGP for ages, and its significantly less then that 1 with a working turbo/master cylinder. I dont know of anyone whos rebuilt their powermaster master cylinder.
why do you want to get rid of it is a better question?
ive got 2 projects, 1 more then i need
so getting this for 1,500 is good? and should I go for it?
if you wanna put the time and money into it, theres an entire board who will support ya and do what we can, you gotta choose that. be warned, they become addicting
they seem like a great car :P
tell em a grand, no more, you should be able 2 get it for that if ya play ya cards right. make sure the bodys straight and the thing hasnt been beat on. good luck man, welcome 2 the site :D
Actually, last time I checked the PMIII pricing, it's about $2800 new and $850 rebuilt by Prior Remanufacturing.
As for the price, I would really look closely at the body and interior, as well as suspension and brakes. $1500 is a lot for one the has a bad master cylinder and turbo. Those items alone will cost you as much as the car. I wouldnt give him more than $900 even if the rest was really nice.
Well, my dad bought his TGP winter beater 2 years ago for $1500. It was a completely rust free car with good tires, 103,000 miles on it, absolutely no dents, perfect interior. Everything worked. The brakes work perfectly...which is very rare. The only thing that was wrong with it is it was overboosting, so when you got on the gas more than half way if would cut out...which I found to be a bad boost controller ($14 part). Well, the cat got clogged and it started making no boost. So we ended up getting a rebuilt turbo for it before figuring out it was the cat, and then figuring out the boost controller was bad. So basically it was a perfect car that needed a new cat and a boost controller, which would cost ~$150. However, now he has $2500 and it has a brand new turbo, a chip, a t-stat, a K&N filter, no cat, and new mufflers. The guy that we bought it from babied it, stored it winters, etc..., but he couldn't figure out the overboosting problem and thats why he got rid of it. Its a nice car that gets great mileage and will get up and go when you want it to.
IMO it would have to be a perfect car other than the problems you listed to be worth it, and I'm doubting it is.

In a nutshell yes. He was looking on ebay for a $2k or less winter beater and came across this TGP for $1800. It had a crappy picture so you couldn't tell if the car was in decent shape or not. My dad emailed him and offered him $1500 cash, not even knowing at the time that there was anything special about the car. He found out after he bought it that it was special. He still takes very good care of the car, it is garaged, and he does all the regular maintenance...he just drives it in the winter...big deal. Not like nobody else on here drives their TGP's in the winter. It is still pretty much rust free...the frame is starting to get a little surface rust, but the body is completely rust free still.

True dat, just because its drivin in the winter doesn't mean the world is coming to an end, its just a TGP, not that its a bad thing or anything :), it just hasn't reached that level where you shouldn't own the vehicle if your driving it in the winter *couple we can relate to, *'89 Turbo Trans-Am, '87 GNX, or for us, '73 Trans-Am.*
Even if take care of, and it shouldn't rust to bad and cause any harmful rust, hell our '88 Beretta with 235,000+ miles has been driving every winter for 16 years now, and it still has 0 body rust, and just little amounts of surfact rust, and we live in Utah, "Greatest Snow On Earth" Snow = Salt = Bad times for bodies, and it still looks good :)
