Title: Major tranny problems....help!
Post by: dbtk2 on October 24, 2004, 10:00:49 PM
I was driving home from work tonight in my STE and I am driving down the road, and all the sudden the car starts free reving. So I put the shifter down to 3rd and it is still free revving, put it down to 2nd and it engages in 2nd gear. So there I was cruising at a nice leisurely 38mph (I just held it at 3k rpm, and I only had 5 miles or so before I was home). Well I came to a stoplight, and had to stop because it was red, well I got down to ~10mph and the light turned green so I stepped on the gas...nothing...free rev. So I stopped at the light, and put the shifter in each gear trying to get it to move and the car would not move. Well, my dad came and picked me up (since at this point I was about 1 mile from home) after pushing the car into a parking lot at that corner. We went and bought a tow strap (it was 11:00 at night, and we had to go less than a mile, so we didn't really car about it being illegal or anything). We hooked up the tow strap and starting going down the road, at about 20mph I put the shifter in 2nd gear and the car starting moving under the engines power again. Somehow I managed to get the tow strap to unhook from the car that was pulling it while driving down the road, so I was driving under my own power and could go faster because there was more than 20ft between the cars. I kept the speeds over 25mph all the rest of the way home. Pulled it into the driveway and had to stop to wait for the garage door to open and it wouldn't move again. So once the car is moving a decent speed it will engage into gear, but it won't go from a stop. I don't know much about transmissions, so I don't know what the problem is, but I am guessing its probably the torque convertor? Any ideas on what it could be? I have no clue and don't have a lot of cash so I would like to figure out what the problem is and get it fixed ASAP.

Thanks,

Shawn

When the tranny died in my TGP it would just barely move the car forward in any gear until I got up to 65 MPH on the highway ( I was lucky because the onramp was downhill ) it locked into overdrive and I drove back in OD. When I slowed down to 35 it was close to a free rev but would barely pull the car if I light pedaled it home. Next morning the only thing that would work for sure was reverse. Reverse was fine because all she had to do was back up into the garge for the 5-speed transformation!!    8)

Unless any of the gurus have another thought...I would say the tranny done shit the bed!! Sorry! 8)

It doesn't really suprise me that the tranny went.  It has been acting really weird for the last few weeks, and it has always felt like something wasn't right since I bought it.  And I really do beat the shit out of the car.  Just think of it like this...I've put 8k on it since I bought it, and its on its 3rd set of tires.  I was hoping hte tranny would last long enough for me to aquire everything I need for a 282 or 284 swap, but that didn't happen.  Oh well...  Its going into the tranny shop tommarrow...$700 for a rebuild on it...I didn't think that was a bad deal at all.

$700 for a rebuild?? :?  Make sure they know what a 4T60 tranny is first! Make sure they know the internals to a TGP 4T60 are much different than the 4T60 used in the normally aspirated Grand Prix.

$700 is by far the lowest I have heard for a tranny rebuild on a TGP 4T60 tranny yet! Are you bringing them the car or just the tranny? Be very very leary of a low price tag...I bought a complete 89 Grand Prix with 5-speed for $400. Then sold the motor from it and made money from the 5-speed donor car.

Just asking you to be careful...would hate to see you waste $$ on a tranny rebuild that might not last a week! 8)

Also check the vacuum modulator, couldn't hurt.

The shop that is doing it I am very good friends with the owner.  I told him specifically that it was a transmission only used in that car and that it needed special parts.  I brought them the whole car.  This is the same shop that GAVE me my 3100 for my topend swap.  They are nice guys.  I stressed over and over again that it was a special tranny for the turbo cars and to make sure thats the stuff they got for it, he said it wasn't a problem.  I go in there just about everyday, as it is next door to the detail shop I work at, so I'm going to go in there tommarow just to be 100% positive yet again.

Actually to me it does sound like the torque conveter (but for worse case cenario it might be the clutch pads but check the conerter first). did you check the tv (throttle valve) cable adjustment yet. To my understanding the tv cable is a kick down depending on how much the Throttl body is open (but someone can correct me if I'm wrong).

the vacuum modulator only controls the firmness of the shift

So I would check the torque converter because it might be going bad. (have you changed the transmission fluid yet if you have what color was it and if not what color is it now?)

I haven't changed the fluid but when I check it it looks brand new.  It was just flushed like 10k ago.  (it was flushed a month before I bought the car...the guy had reciepts for it so I'm assuming he didn't just make it up)  Yes, the TV cable is a kick down depending on how far the throttle is open, however mine has been broken for like a month and a half, so I have had to shift the car myself.  When I did my topend swap I made the cable a little too short and the plastic piece on the end broke off after about a week.  So basicaly without it all that happens is the tranny shifts into the next gear as early as possible, unless you hold the shifter in the gear longer.  For instance if I put the car in OD and go WOT from a stop its in 3rd gear at ~23mph.  But that shouldn't have anything to do with what the tranny is doing.

Right now the tranny is out of the car, I didn't take a look at the torque convertor because I didn't know where they put it, but they hadn't taken the tranny apart yet...all they did was pull it out of the car and set it on the bench.  They are supposed to be tearing it apart right now to see whats wrong with it.  They are gonna replace the torque convertor with the tranny, so I guess it doesn't matter what kind of shape its in.

When they took the tranny out they did notice that my rear motor mount was broken, so they are replacing that as well, and all the cradle bushings were rotted pretty good (which I already knew) so they are going to replace those too.  It should be done Friday night, Saturday morning.
