www.turboste.com isn't working for me anymore, I don't know if anyone else can access this site, I think I remember someone saying it was down for good.
Anyway, I am looking for some pictures and maybe some written instructions on this swap, just for assistance. I finally finished tearing apart my 5 spd donor car and I have everything I need (I think) and I wanted to see the pics of where the hole was cut for the clutch master cylinder. Also the knockout plate for the shifter cables. I won't be doing this for sometime, I just wanted to have them so I know I have them, so I can look if my memory fails.
Anyone know? Thanks!
That sucks that turboste.com is down, as I used it for reference in my swap. :(
The hole for the clutch master is already there, but it's round and it needs to be squared off. You shouldn't need to make the hole any bigger, just cut corners into it to turn it into a square. I don't remember how the square should be oriented though so you have to figure that part out. I took out the powercrapperIII as it made it much easier to get in there to square the hole. I used a dremel with one of those flexible extensions, and it seemed to work pretty well. Now, as far as the hole for the cables goes...I don't remember the size of the hole that needs to be drilled, but just measure the gromment on the cables. There is a small divot where the hole needs to be drilled. You have to drill the hole first and then the knockout will be directly behind the hole you just drilled.
Let me tell you something from experiences that I've had...if you think you might need it, then keep it. You can always throw it out later if you don't end up needing it. Also, make sure you keep the little clips that hold the 5 speed shifter to the body, as they're not the same ones that that the automatic shifter uses. I found this out the hard way, but that was my only missing part so I can't really complain.
Thanks. It does suck, maybe I can get in touch with him sometime soon and see if he can help me. I think his name was Jason right? Eclipse5302? Well the car is gone today, so hopefully I have everything I need. There are a few j/y's around here within 60 miles so it shouldn't be a huge problem if I don't have something. It will be a while before I get the $$ and time to do this, because I am going to rebuild the engine and swap in the new PMIII that redturbo90 sold me. The auto crapped out back in June and I've been waiting to do this all summer. I wanted to get the low mileage one running right, which ended in a full rebuild, so I have to pay some bills and make some more $$ before I can even think of starting this. I can't wait though, your video of the 284 made me so excited, I still have that thing saved on my computer and watch it every now and again. I can't wait.
Another thing is I will have to remember which cable goes where when I mate it to the tranny. I did that 4 months ago and can't remember for the life of me. But I saved everything that was included with the shifter and what not, just have to put it back in the TGP. Boy this is gonna be fun.

this is the hole you need to modify. like skalor i used a Dremel tool with a 18" flex shaft and a tungsten carbide cutter to shape the round hole into a larger square hole. be careful though - that tungsten carbide cutter cut throught the sheet metal like butter. do a bunch of small cuts and test fit the clutch master cylinder often. i done have a pic of the modified hole but i'll try to get one for you. i had it easy though - no PM3 in the way.
I will be taking my PMIII out when I do this, in fact the entire engine bay will be empty.. the tranny is shot and I am going to rebuild the engine. It has 160K so it's gonna need it after sitting for a year +. Thanks Josh. If you can find that picture of it finished that would be awesome, maybe you would have some rough dimensions of how wide it should be? Anyone ever measure the hole completed?
If you're going to have it all taken apart, I would switch out the plate, and go w/ vacuum while you're in there. If you are going to switch out the pedal assy, you'll be just a few bolts away as it is. I know you just bought a PM3, but it's just an idea. I love my vacuum brakes.

you can pretty much tell exactly the size and shape of the hole you need to make by looking at the pushrod end of the master cylinder....the end of the master cylinder is square shaped with "cut-off corners" where it goes through the firewall. basically you need to copy the size and shape of the end of the master cylinder and make a hole like it in the firewall.
Jay - is it really that easy to swap out that plate? i thought brian89gp said something about how the entire dash had to come out, it was a total PITA etc etc. i agree it's the 'right way' to do it, but i myself have never had any problems with the way i did it.
I'm not totally sure that I want to convert to vacuum brakes.. I know it will be a giant task to accomplish with all of the lines and so on, plus the car is gone now, so I didn't get the plate, and this PMIII has been redone by Prior, so I'm not too worried about it failing.. at least in the near future. I thought about it though. How much would it cost to convert totally?
Well, as far as the swap goes, the p/o of TestBed said it wasn't that big of a deal. And well worth the time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's easy, and not even that necessary but if you have the car apart, why not go the extra step. When the tranny and engine come out of Sunshine, it's going to vacuum brakes, for more reasons than 1. I'm going to pick up some more stuff (parts, key fob, etc.) from the p/o soon, so I'll pick his brain on what all he had a problem with.
