Alright guys,
According to the Turbo Shop guy and Engineered Performance.. A piece of CARBON took out the newly rebuilt T-25 on Project TGP in just less than 170 miles of driving time...
It spun the bearing and to quote Engineered Performance "It took the housing with it" so while the Turbo guy said he'll rebuild the turbo for free .. They still want $300 for a new housing assembly...
A piece of carbon eh????.. Geez How convient... I just don't buy the shit. I'm done with that Rip off shop here... I'm gonna just do the shit myself when I can...
But first I need help to order a new T-25 Turbo for my GP... What is the factory A/R 's on the turbo?....Exhaust side, intake side and exhaust inlet?
Also, I wanted to just go ahead and get the GT28RS71 ball bearing unit... BUT I think I'll be better off with the T-25 till I determine if there is any left over carbon in that engine... :? [/b]
It's GT28RS(disco potato):

GT2871R:

The GT2871R is the exact same turbo as the GT28RS with the exception that it has a 71mm compressor wheel compared to the 60mm wheel in the GT28RS. This will ultimately make it spool a little slower due to the extra weight, but it will push more air. I would recommend the GT28RS to people that just want a nice upgrade that will still spool very close to the stock T-25.
I'd really like to see more TGPs running around the GT28RS on them. I might be getting a new turbo this winter. I got the go ahead from the wife that if I sell my Lumina I can buy a new turbo, so all I need now is someone to buy the Lumina. 8)
Are there any concrete figures as to how much more power a GT28RS will add?
My T-25 is getting close to needing rebuilt, and I'd LOVE to get a disco potato for the car.. but DAMN is that thing expensive!
Here's a better deal on that turbo.. not sure about warranty but it knocks close to $300 off the price. There is another one available, but it's closer to retail price. Just search for GT28RS.

Actually, ATP has quoted people around $950 for the GT28RS so it's really not any cheaper. I would definitely talk to the ATP guys as they know what they're talking about, and you can probably get the best price that way. 8)
JOsh,
Right I worried about the unit not being a drop in... and needing more modifications to work properly in our TGP's.. That's whay I hesitate to go out a purchase a new one...
also.. here's the story on the T-25 that was in the car:
The Turbo is another story all by itself!! I had a newly rebuilt T-25 put on by the shop. Ok? $500 for that. Jeff Ianitello drove it for about 75 miles to check things out... no Problem. I picked up the car. Drove it home... (approx. 50 miles) So the Turbo had less than 200 miles on it.. I park the car. Come back out 2 hours later and crank it up to move it in the garage. White smoke starts pouring out the rear, turns out to be oil leaking pass the bearing seals on the turbo.. WTF !!! I take it BACK to EP. The dammed shop wants money for taking it off again.. WTF!!!! So I take it off MYSELF to have the shop's Turbo place that rebiult it take a look to see what happened.
I'm thinking , OK It needs to be rebuilt AGAIN.. FOR FREE it better be!!!!! BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!
Turbo shop comes back saying "There was a piece of trash in the turbo wedged in the bearing. It most likely came from the oil pump or possibly just come carbon build-up in the oil galleys. it was a hard, crunchy piece of carbon. When the bearing stopped turning, the shaft spun and ruined the housing. It needs a new center section. He will rebuild the turbo at no cost to you, but the new center section will cost you 325.00..." DUHHHHHH ...Thats not free ANYMORE ***ER!!! What the hell happened to such a THING CALLED a WARRANTY!!!!!!
Either way I'm gonna be out of $$$ But I'll be dammed to hell if those guys get one more penny outta ME!!!
I could go On and On..
Dave,
Sorry about your luck with the turbo & Engineered Performance. Hope things get better for ya.
Thomas
THANKS Thomas, I'm gonna need it... Geez EP just sent me an email.. They want $30 round trip shipping to return the turbo to me from North Carolina!!
I can not believe the NERVE of some people!!!
Easiest thing to say to them is, "a happy customer might tell 10 people about them...you are not happy and may tell 100!"

Yea Dude.. you know what? I don't think EP even cares anymore!!!

It depends really. I would guess like 30+hp on your average Chipped TGP. However, if more modded, like in my case with a cam and topend, it *should* give a larger gain because my turbo is closer to being "maxed out," so its not very efficient. I'm hoping to go with a GT2871R if I keep the car long enough to get around to upgrading the turbo.

That is a shame because there are 381 registered members on this board alone. If only 100 of them are active...right there is 100 less potential clients for them because of what they did to you. I know I will never use them now and I have a potential need for two turbo's in my garage...
Dave,
The whole "piece of carbon" getting into the turbo doesnt sit well with me. You werent running without an air cleaner or without a filter on your BOV (if you have one).
- If it is a new turbo did it have a warranty?
- Does EP have a warranty period?
- Dont they stand by their work?
- You could report this to the BBB?
- What else did the "piece of carbon" do? pistins, TB, oil pump??
I think I am as irritated as you with this, must take some more Prozac  or start smoking again :vamp: .
Thomas :usa:
Dave, I have a good center cartridge. If your interested PM me.
Any of the GT turbos can add 100+ HP easy if you can keep it fed. :D They have an instiable appetite for pistons and rods.
Jud
Jud,
I need a Turbine housing section :(
Well Dave now I am confused. Do you need both the center cartrage and the exhaust housing of just the exhaust. I have the exhaust housing also. It's cracked through the waste gate. (who's isn't) It still pushed 16#.
Jud
Jud.. Sorry man.. Didn't mean to sound confusing.. What I need is a Center section and the turbine housing.. Both of those parts are screwed.. BUT since EP wants to CHARGE me another 30 bucks (For round trip shipping) I think I'll just let EP keep the POS... Cuz I can't reuse it anyway (to rebuild)
Jeff M aid he's got a complete one that can be rebuilt....
One theory surrounding the PIECE of Carbon is , the ONLY way a piece of carbon could get into the bearing is #1 Left over from the previous rebuild, or #2 was in the oil supply line to the turbo.
I just don't see HOW it got past the new filter.
BTW I never drove the car without the airfilter.
Yea I don't buy the carbon crap either. I'll remember never to buy from them. Whatever if you want the cartrage and turbine housing that I have 100 buckes shipped. Dosen't need rebuilding.
Good luck in whatever you do. Hope you get it running soon.
Jud
