well no replies here.......but on W-Body.com there was some so i will add my findings here also....

there was question of this filter for the turbo K&N RX-4950 would flow enough for our applications

so i emailed K&N Tech Dept. and for a reply from Leon as follows

QuoteThe RX-4950 will not flow enough air for the application.  I checked and non of the filters with a 2-1/2? inlet will.  You will need.  To flow the necessary air would require a filter 7 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall provided the rest of the system can support the flow.  By the numbers you will need 773CFM.  To get to a larger filter will require a larger inlet.

Thank you,

Leon S. Collins

Any Thoughts???

I think the other filters some of us use are 7" long?  I have the RU-1810 now but it got melted by the turbo.  So I have a RU-1390 coming, same but with the 20deg bend.  Got them from www.ajusa.com for $28, and $34.  Maybe the CFM is one reason these cars seem to die a bit up top.

well i have just about had it with this guy.......

just got this in a email

QuoteHello,

In addition Installing the filter directly to the turbo will eventually destroy the filter.  The flange cannot take the abuse from the heat a turbo puts out after shutting down.

im going to look at the ones you mentioned above No1Kicker as a alternative....

These are the specs on the RU-1390 I use.

RU-1390 Product Specifications
Product Style: Oval Straight Universal Air Filter
Flange Angle: 20 degrees
Flange Inside Diameter: 2.438 in (62 mm)
Flange Length: 1.25 in (32 mm)
Flange Type: Angled
Height: 7 in (178 mm)
Outside Length: 4.5 in (114 mm)
Outside Width: 3.75 in (95 mm)
Top Style: Rubber
Top Material/Finish: None
Filter Re-Oiling Amount: 0.73 oz (22 ml)
Flanges: 1
Weight: 1 lb (0.4 kg)
Product Box Length: 5.5 in (140 mm)
Product Box Width: 4.5 in (114 mm)
Product Box Height: 9.13 in (232 mm)

Haven't had any problems w/ the filter straight on the turbo so far(it's been installed for about a year now, I don't drive the car that much though...so some of you using these as daily drivers might melt through the filters rubber flange quicker.)

Picture of it installed(barely clears the intercooler, haven't had a problem w/ crushing it since my original lower mounts only have a tad over 70K on them and are in perfect shape and I have new dogbone mounts.)

^I haven't gotten around to adding a hole to to the filter for the PCV yet.

UPDATE: RX-4950 Product

With Engine in car    and intercooler in place    your going to have to cut 3/4 to 1 inch off the rubber flange to get this filter to fit with come clearance from the IC.

still has more than enough rubber flange left to mount on the Turbo with no issues.

just thought i would share with the fellow 3.1 Turbo guys on this Forum.

that is all  :)

When I put my motor in the CS I'm gonna get some mandrel bent pipe and make an intake. Run it straight out from the turbo, 90* bend and go staright down about halfway down the intercooler. That's how I had it in the TGP but I was using the stock intake hose and an exhaust adapter between the filter and the end of the hose. Worked quite well at getting cooler air compared to the filter mounted on the turbo.

So the RU-1810, are u very satisfied with it? how did the rubber neck stand up? does it fit perfect? is there any way to mabye pad or add more rubber between the clamp to keep it from riping or melting? Whatd did u use for the breather?

I think he thinks we put the filter on the exhaust end.

Speaking of filters does anybody else make the reusable filters. I need an odd size and KN comes close but not close enough unless I get smaller than what I want. Obviously I want the biggest for my new toy(turbo). :)

Product Style: Round Tapered Universal Air Filter
Base Outside Diameter: 6 in (152 mm) KN has 5 3/8 I'll proly have to settle for that.
Flange Inside Diameter: 4 in (64 mm)
Flange Length: 1 in  max
Flange Type: Centered Rubber
Height: 5 in (140 mm)
Top Outside Diameter: 4 in max

Tried Fram air hog but couldn't even find a listing for special filters just stock replacements.

Jud, I think these are supposed to be on par with or better than K&N's.

http://www.sbfilters.com

Here's a direct link to their .pdf catalog that lists their sizes(about a 6mb sized file....just a warning for anyone that may still be using dial-up).
