Title: The whole cluster problem
Post by: GutlessSupreme on February 03, 2005, 11:54:16 PM
My cluster's tach and speedo are off big time. HUD is correct. There was talk of this possibly being a bad ground, not necessarily a shot cluster. Was there any final word on this?

When I got my STE my tach/speedo were about 20-25% fast.  (the tach would be into the speedo when it shifted at WOT)  I put a new cluster in it and now its right.  I guess it could be a bad ground, but I'm betting its the cluster.

My speedo/tach are off also.  Everything else reads properly though, I've skimmed over all the old gauge posts I could find here and some suggested a bad ground, but nobody gave a definite answer.  I might pull the cluster this weekend and see if I can find anything out of the ordinary in there.  My speedo is right at lower speeds, but if you start romping on the gas, it gets to the point where it's ~15mph or so off at higher speeds, not to mention the tach makes me think I've got a mean revving DOHC motor under the hood winding out to a tad over seven grand.  My HUD is dead on despite the cluster issues.

Has anyone heard of this happening on other GPs? I'm wondering if it's a defect specific to the TGP clusters.

It is the cluster and it's $350  for GM to send it out to get it fixed (I've asked the dealership one day about the speedometer being off). I will ask some guys at work to see exactly what they fix to try and help people out with this problem.

Had the same problem.  Swapped a new cluster and it was better.

Mine was like $30 on ebay.  I could sell you my original one, it reads 20% fast and the boost gauge only works part of the time, but I'd give you a killer deal on it!

Mine works its just 20mph off but the head up display works. I work at the Chevrolet dealership by my house so I get a chance to talk to the guys there about these problems. If I could find out whats wrong with the speedometer I could try to fix it. But no one seems to have that answer yet.
