Title: powermaster brakes
Post by: leeparrish on February 04, 2005, 12:46:27 PM
I know this has probably been beat to death and i am sorry for burdening
yall with the question but i need some help.  I had a guy give me 1990
turbo gtp. no brakes what so ever. pedal goes to the floor and remains there until i manually lift it with my foot. I donot hear the pump running
when I turn on the ignition. I jumped the motor relay and fluid runs out of the back of the power master system. I have read online how to rebuild this system seems to be fairly simple process.  by the way I am an ASE
certified mechanic but on heavy trucks...so with a little help i think I can accomplish this. I also have read how to convert it over to conventional
vacuum brake system..(not hard but time consuming). Has anyone tried
either process. any help would be appreciated..

Look at Chris A's web site //www.tpsgarage.com.
A lot of info there.
The rebuilding is not the problem.
It is the availability of parts.
I do not think GM ever offered a kit for that Master Cylinder.

Butterfly Racing just did a rebuild in Sweden but
did not give us any part numbers other than saying that
he used 3different kits from a Fiero  and some other car.

Thanks for your help. I think I may mess with it this weekend. by the way do these brake system just go out or do they give some sort of noticeable signs?

If the brake motor runs a lot,
the accumulator probably needs to be replaced.

The rear housing cracks, that is where you are seeing the fluid. That is why Prior Reman replaces them with a unit they make out of Solid aluminum.

I appreciate it. I think that my problem is fatal.  The old power master is cracked just like you said. sounds like a change over to conventional or
a rebuilt from PRIOR. Thanks for your help. I'm sure I will have more questions in the future.
