Title: Confused with what to call this?
Post by: z284pwr on March 07, 2005, 09:50:26 PM
Okay, first I will say that the car has not moved under its own power for about a month now, the PMIII rebuilt unit arrive last week and we finally got it on and almost everything ready to get it driving again, but problem after problem coming up.  Now I don't know if these two are in relation some way or not but anyways.  Shortly after bleeding the brakes and what not we discovered that the brake lights were stayin on, we figured this is the brake switch under the dash due to the spring that fell out.  We got the brake lights to go off by moving the pedal just slightly forward while we were working so the battery didn't drain.  Now the next part, today I drove the car just up the street and back to make sure the brakes were working, which is the first time the car has been driving.  So I go to park the car and when I attempt to put the car in park, it grinds.  In other words the starter kicked over.  So now the car won't go in park while the car is running or the starter kicks over.  Plus, when I unhooked the battery and put the car in park, then hook the battery up, the car turns over, with the keys not even in the car
So now we are stuck with this confusing problem?  Can anyone shed some light on this?  This problem only happens with the car in park?  Did somehow the brake light switch and this problem have a relationship, because we can no longer get the brake lights to go off no matter what we do?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

sounds like a serious short in the transmission neutral safety switch, probalby from the backup light circuit which would be active with the key on. not related to the brake lights because the switch is usually out of adjustment after a master cylinder swap.

Quote from: Chris Asounds like a serious short in the transmission neutral safety switch,

I do not have a schematic in front of me...but how would it send power to the starter? IIRC the Gear select switch only switches the power to the solenoid...not the starter motor.

*edit* Wait that makes total sense now that I think about and re-read his original post. Engine is running and when put up into park it grinds...the solenoid is engaging causing the starter gear to try to engage the flywheel!

That is the only thing similar to the shifter and the starter is the gear select switch! 8)

Okay, so neutral safety switch seems to be where to start.  Where exactly is it located on these cars?  I have never dealt with an Automatic car so I have no clue where, I have only worked with Manuals which is pretty obviously where it is *clutch safety switch of course*

Also might be ignition switch. I think it got stuck or shorted.  But I woun't rule out the shift selecter harness. It is by the x-over...which might  have melted it or coroted the protective plastic on it. Just look at the harness on the shift selector. Look for melted plastic or bare wire, craked insulation.

The selector switch and harness is on the trans..on back. Right where the shift selector cable is at. If you can't see it..have someone move the shifter from park to 1st to see where it is while you look around the back of the trans. It'll hit you in the face once you see it.

Update:  Went and got a new brake switch and neutral safety switch....

Both are fixed, brake pedal required a "slight" modification but its fixed.  For the Neutral Safety switch, for the ones with the keen eye....

Note what is right below this unit.....and what happens when you are dealing with removing a master cylinder.....needless to say, brake fluid had leaked and eaten the casing and got inside the switch and shorted it out, its pretty nasty looking and yeah....pretty obvious what happened....now to get the car moving and get the stupid door open
