Title: For people with No parking brake problem!
Post by: Prospeeder on April 02, 2005, 03:44:57 PM
Ok, for those of you who have the common problem of the Parking brake pumping but not setting, i fixed it

well, i looked up under the parking brake pedal and looked at all the mechinisms, and the 15 year old grease gummed up around the tooth that grabs the gears when u press the pedal. So i scraped some of the gummed grease, and then saturated it in WD-40 and used a flat head screw driver and moved the tooth back and forth, now the thing sets the parking brake in 1 pump. Hope that helps some of you people with Parking brake troubles

Both my TGP's do that.  I'll have to look into that.  I just never used the ebrakes.  (Have bronze bushings in both)

acutally it might save u life on ur tranny if u set ur parking brake be4 u shift into park, cause the car rocks on the transmission, even a small amount on level surfaces, and it stresses ur tranny and may take life off of it, so stop, put the parking brake on, then put the trans into Park, they force u to do it now in drivers ed, and tell u all about it

I always do this when I park on hills.  On flat ground like in my garage and stuff I don't worry about it, but on a noticable grade, I set the parking brake before putting the car in park.  Can't do it on the STE though as the e-brake doesn't work.

well fix it, try doing what i tried, look up in there, if u can see the tooth that grabs the gear, press the pedal down and watch the gears move and see if the tooth grabs, or if it just stays there, if its just staying there, u need to lube it, and move it back and forth with a screw driver, then it should work perfectly

The bronze does fix the seizing the calipers can do from a lack of use, but using the parking brakes is the only way the rear calipers/brakes get adjusted.  Without adjustment the rears slowly wear away from making good contact/braking with the fronts, and is another reason the fronts wear out so fast when they are doing all the braking 8).

And the removal of the old grease does do the trick, good point!!

Shawn(GnatGoSplat) has had this noted on his webpage(w-body.com) for a long time now.  My parking brake was freewheeling when I got my TGP until I regreased it, started working like new again. 8)

WELL LA DE FRICKIN DA!!!!

Yeah, Jeff, I know... But since my brake was jacked up I only do it as neccesary.  Also, in 34 months (combined) of driving my TGP's I have a TOTAL (that's 2 cars) of 2300 miles.  So, I've only had to adjust them once or twice    :D

The rear brakes don't work at all 'cause the calipers are seized.  So I don't think doing this is gonna fix that.  When I get around to putting the new calipers on I'll fix it...but the car has much bigger problems that I need to get fixed first.  The car has to be able to go before I'm worried about making it stop.

Boy where HAVE you been?    Ya man, lack of exercise and the joints get seized up, suppose to be a statement in our owners manual saying to exercise our brakes once a week or something like that    If you don't then the stock non-bronze bushings rust up basically stopping the brakes from adjusting so once the pad does some wear, your pads don't make contact with the rotor any more......so if you look at your rotor, it not shiny no more  ....yes rust is a form of "not shiny" :P   Sorry, feeling good tonight and playing with you though the facts about the brakes here are fact 8)   The bronze bushings don't rust so they are suppose to stop the calipers from getting stuck permanent, but exercising the brakes is still needed once in a while to keep them adjusted and the pad making good contact with the rotor.  All this regarding the rears only just in case you missed that.

I think most parts places; Checker, Pep Boys, Auto Zone, like that, they should know what you are looking for, just check before you hand them the cash!!

yeah so my rear rotors look nice and shiny still...but i checked the e-brake and it doesn't work when i let the pedal out..........so the e-brake does go on when i push the pedal in but it won't lock......is this the same as what everyone else experiences or is it complete loss of e-brake??? looks like ill be giving this fix a shot anyhow!! thanks for the tips guys!! :D

p.s. will just pushing the e-brake with out leting it lock (like mine) keep the rear calipers from siezing and such??

 Hate to do this to you, go back and read prospeeders first post in this topic to fix your non-latching e-brake

If the rear rotor is shiny then its been working, should be good to go, or stop that is

ok so its axactly the same as me......so i still need an answer......will just pushing the e-brake pedal be sufficient for adjustment of the e-brake or does it need to be pumped and set with a fully functional e-brake???

p.s i went out and found the lever/catcher and worked it with a screw driver and its definately super stiff.....i don't see a bunch of gooey grease and i can't really tell where to clean or lubricate.....so should i go back and pull the assembly out and or should i just spray and pray with it in the car, how did u guys do it with out making a mess...
