Title: Raced an 05 SL55
Post by: Jeff M on April 19, 2005, 12:34:33 AM
Should still be a good story :) .  I am at a stop light and approaches next to me in the left lane is a new silver 05 SL55 MB, Supercharge V8 with 492 hp, he comes to a fast stop showing off some, can?t blame him, that car is worth some showing off 8) . Top is down and see some guy in his later 20?s, I am a bit older    and in my TSTE with the heads I am working on, 30 lb injectors and a turbo upgrade (T3 Super 60) though still a choker   on the exhaust side but since the engine is still getting its break-in miles on mineral oil, don?t mind/not ready for lots of hammering, and since I want to base line the readings such as how bad the exhaust backpressure stil is with this setup, and as I move forward with a different exhaust side for the turbo upgrade comparing the new results.  Anyways, left turn light oncoming changes green and we wait for people to get done and our light to turn green, it does but there is still a fucking guy driving a minivan   that is still wanting to turn, fine but we both nudge out into the intersection at him to show what we think of his arrogance, knowing a Mercedes (wife has a new one too but no SL  ) they shift out of 1st really fast unless you keep your foot planted right from the get-go, so since he could not stay planted on the pedal/in 1st gear without hitting the minivan, he is into 2nd gear, and as soon as the minivan clears I am on it, my car still spools up lightening quick like all our cars are so good at doing and he hammers it as he sees me move (and the new loud engine and exhaust growl my heads cause :D ) but I still pull on him since he was left in 2nd gear when he was able to clear the van, hear me and hammer it.  And the other thing with Mercedes, low rpms in their V6, Base V8 and Supercharged V8 is a bit slow only compared to what happens after they get some rpms  , not slow mind you but lacking with what a few rpms can do for them.  So anyways I pull along side him as he is hammered in 2nd gear then pull ahead and do pretty good for a while, but as his rpms start to climb where he will take me and walk away I get a merging car up ahead coming into my lane and have to back out, not like I was going to stay ahead of him for long but enough of a race initially to phsyc him out, and he lifts up out off his seat to turn around and see back at me and check out what that zippy white 4-door was 8) , I give a smile and a nod and he does the same and speeds off, going after some motorcycle rider up head.

So, not a kill, just some well timed fun, I knew he would take me but I love any race win or lose if you can play it safe, and not go 100 mph on some 45 mph road near town (we went all of 5mph over the speed limit during our race), and give a nod or get one/show of respect 8) .

And before anyone asks, though should have caught that above, no info on how fast these parts I am running are, still waiting till the rings are seated and while I work out some drivability tuning, but with what stock is, chip?d is and some of the guys here that have some mods and run mid to high 13?s, should be low 13?s on pump gas, that has been my goal years ago, to get 350 hp in an easy approach without tons of cash and custom work and labor to get there, though running 225mm tires on this TSTE verses 245mm on a TGP is going to make launches a new skill to learn all over again

Great story Jeff, thanks for sharing.  I can never get anyone to race me.  It doesn't matter what car I'm in, the GTP or the Turbo, no one ever bites.  I guess it's OK, I just save it up for the strip.

Glad you liked it, been a while too for me to get a race  , last one worth talking about was a Lexus SC400, same lack of low rpm power V8 kind of car that in a chip'd TGP did him by quite a few car lenths, then let up to the 45 mph speed limit which he used to blast past me, he can think he won, me know better  :)   Maybe you need to quit driving that red sports car and get a lame rental car looking white 4-door turbo grand prix  , add some rims and a spoiler and people think you need to have all that fancy looking stuff tamed  Check out the pic, does make it look better http://www.turbograndprix.com/favorite.htm sorry for the link being an entire page, can never remember how my web site likes me to do just one pic  its never as easy as just the web site plus pic details, but there are some other cars added at the bottom fun to check out!

Great story Jeff!

It is funny the looks I get in my TSTE when I pull hard on the ricer boys here in town! I finally got to use a quote I saw on another forum. Kid asked me..."Is that turbo charged?"...I said..."No i have that tornado thingy in the intake!"

The looks you get in a 4 door LG5 w-body.  In my STE I get a lot of looks, but the Turbo badge on the side and louvers and wheels and stuff give it away if you look at it for a second (obviously at first glance nothing is expected), not to mention the not so stock exhaust.  In the Lumina though...you get a little more than looks...you get dropped jaws.  They are like WTF!?!? that Lumina just smoked the tires off and blew away my Mustang GT?  Then they ask me what is done to the engine and I say "it has a chip and an intake and some roller rockers."  I just neglect to mention the fact that the engine that has those mods isn't the stock one.

Nice story Jeff. Your TSTE looks very nice with those wheels and spoiler, you should take some more pics of it.  The light covers on the TGP look good as well, makes me think of KITT from Knight Rider for some reason though. 8)
