I have 2 TGP's the mint one I picked up about 9 mo ago has light gold and the one I have had for 4 years has a darker richer looking gold which I prefer. Did the owner of the mint one just use too strong of a wheel cleaner or what do you think? :?:
I have noticed the same thing on my TGP, the Wheels from the 89 are definitely a lighter gold than the ones on the 90. I have no idea why this is, but I have noticed it.
Does anyone know what color the 1990's are, i am going to sandblast and repaint them, the paint is pretty bad, but i don't know what color to use?
Thanks, in Advance
Actually, I think the wheels are powder coated.
three of my rims have some small spots without paint and the fourth must be a repalcement rim, because it has no paint, plus they are all really dirty, and have black build-up spots so i was going to try just repainting them, but if they are powder coated i can't right? Maybe i should ask Jeff M from the picture of his car i would say his rim are repainted, and i don't really know what type of paint to use or what color, i had heard you should clear coat them though. Any ideas?
Heck yeah, heres an idea: paint em the color of your car! Thats what I did and now I wouldnt have it any other way. I got a Black '90 with the same base clear metallic black paint on my wheels as on the rest of the car and NOTHING but compliments on how good they look.
First: strip off original paint with chemical stripper
Next: tape off shiny rims and shoot with basecoat
Finally: remove tape and clearcoat the whole wheel
I have had people think it was a brand new car. Dont worry about losing the cars identity or something. Chances are whoever has never seen one of these cars in their entire life, and it looks like it was meant to be. Besides, you arent changing the wheels, but after you do this it looks like you just went and spent $1500 on new wheels. No regrets here.
sounds like that would look good, Two questions: What chemical stripper do use? Does it take off the black build up on the flat edge piece that is upainted? Third question do you have a picture i would like to see what it looks like on your car. Thanks,
That would look good on a black TGP but I don't think it would on mine.
If you want to know what a red TGP would look like with red painted wheels, look at the car at the top of this board. Well those wheels are gold but they look red enough that I thought they were until I looked really close.
Also have you all visited the Tirerack.com wheel selector program. You can put in your car GP, even El Caminos like my other car and then put several wheel size/styles on it. You can even see a black gp with black wheels or red/red.
You could paint em black for a red car. I have seen this on a convertible model and it looked better than gold, thats for sure.
