Has anybody used a starter off a '98 Grand Prix? I just got one and it is WAY smaller and lighter, but it looks like it will bolt right up. Are you supposed to use shims or what? There was a couple metal shims on there when I took mine off.
I don't know about it bolting up or not, but it very easily may bolt right up. However, you do need to use the shims. If there were some in there when you took it apart, then put them back in there with the new starter.

If it's off of a 3100 it should bolt up. Like was said already, make sure you use the shims that are with your existing starter on the new one.

Sorry, din not want to say you guys are wrong :( , just making a correction since I did this too as recommended by Chris A, take the shims out!! When I installed the smaller/lighter 3100 starter with shims it made a nasty grinding sound, took the shims out and nice and quiet 8) YES you would think as I did that you should leave them in but must be the 3100 starter is made to fit without them!!
Should be GM part number: 10465459 A little pricey, my discount is around $150.
GMpartsdirect shows $152.39 but add $30 for shipping and its $185.39, then the core charge of 45.00 gets it up there even more to start, then another $20 to ship back your core makes the $185 more like $205 final cost :shock: But it fits and spins up faster and draws less batter juice so offers a lot over our heat-soaked monster, and this one does not have the heat-soak problem 8)

It is at P.M. Alternator right now getting its guts rebuilt. My friend owns the place. He is modifying a CS130D alternator case for me so I can put it in my TGP. It and my new reduced ratio starter should be done by next Wednesday. So if anyone else wants to be the first W- body owner to get outfitted with state-of-the-art technology like this should probably hurry :P
So does anybody have a need for a cs130 chrome alt. that is getting refurbished right now at P.M. Alternator? I am getting it done up right now for use as a back-up unit, or for sale, or trade. It cost me $250 new, I had it built up to 65 amp idle, 135 ampmax.

I pulled a mini starter off of a CS once and it had a shim in it. :wink:
I have a 3100 Starter in mine and i used one shim also and no issues :wink:
my old one came off with a thin and a thick shim, one twice as thick as the other. How do you know what the tolerance is going to be? there is probably a trick to it. I dont want it to get stuck on the gear or grinding both don't sound like too much fun. :lol:
