Title: fuel pump problem for myself also?! :(
Post by: ZachS on September 01, 2002, 05:56:02 PM
Hey guys... I think I've got a fuel pump problem also.  :(

History...

2 nights ago, I was driving home with my little brother in his DOHC 3.4 Lumina behind me.  I decided I was going to be really cool and pull a top speed run.  80-90-100-110-115, and wham... RPM's drop to about 2000.  I take my foot off the gas... and RPM's stay there.  I push on the gas... and my RPM's stay at 2000, but my factory boost gauge would go up with throttle pressure.  At this point, I'm going so fast, I cant hear wether the car is running or not.  I coast down to about 65, and the car dies completely (IE... dash lights come on, RPM's go to zero), I do all I can do just to steer the damn car onto an off-shoot country road.  My brother follows suit.  I put the car in park, pop my hood, and get out.  Nothing seems to be leaking, coolant temp is fine, no smell of burned oil or anything.  So I sat there for 10 minutes and let it cool, and started it back up.  It ran kinda rough at idle, and as soon as I gave it a little gas it chugged a bit, then drove fine.  I got it back to my hometown, parked it for the night, and went to bed.

Now... fast forward to last night... my brother and I are headed to Bloomington to see a few friends.  We stop in a town thats about 30 minutes away.  As I'm pulling into this gas station, my car is really kinda chugging.  I pull up into the parking spot, and the car dies.  I say fuggit, went inside got a drink, and came back out.  Tried starting it for about 20 minutes or so, and it would crank fine... but it wouldnt ever catch then run.  It kinda caught a few times, but nothing that I would call 'running'.

So I hopped in with my brother in his car, and we go ahead with the night.  About midnight rolls around, we come back... I try to start it, and same thing... just cranks and cranks and cranks...

This afternoon... I figured I'd try my luck again. I went over there, and my car started right up.  I drove it back here to my hometown, and by the time I got here it was chugging and running kinda rough again.

I parked it at my mechanics garage, and here I sit.  :(  No clue what the hell is wrong with my baby.  :(

Here is something intersting though... last night, I would turn the key on, then off, then on, then off, just so I could hear that the fuel pump was priming like it should have.  Most of the time, it would buzz( prime), but a few times it did nothing when I did a KOEO.

Fuel pump maybe?   :(

Thanks,
Zach

anybody wanna buy my baby?   :(  This sucks.  :(  I'm so broke right now, I can barely afford to keep gas in this thing, along with college and hospital bills... its killing me.  :(

I posted the previous message. I did not want to go with out my car so I took a gamble. THe only store that I found that listed a difference for the TGP was Autozone. I also ooked up the part number on AC delco' s website. To my surprise AC delco actually has an option under 1990 pontiac for a Mclaran grand prix. This site listed the same part number as autozone so I went to auto zone grabbed one and had Pep boys put it on. So far the car is working but am still not completely confidant it was the right one.  Does any one know what  the fuel pressure at the rail is supposed to be?

The symptoms you gave sounded just like mine. however I never heard any pump priming. after it would not start. But after the new pump was put it it started right up.

I would suggest checking the relay and the fuel pressure. If you have no pressure and your relay is good I bet your fuel pump is wasted like mine was.

By the way the fuel pump I got was AC-Delco #EP375.  I may upgrade to another fuel pump later but I needed my car running.  That will be on the list when I really have the time and money. I have Jeff M chip and crossover so I think the pump is decent but I think I have a vaccum issue still. However my car is NOT slow by any means. Wheel spin REALLY EASY.

Good Luck.

Fuel filter is almost new.

And on top of this new problem, my trans STILL does not shift right.  :(
