Title: DIS or electrical short
Post by: maddux31 on August 27, 2005, 09:03:15 AM
Car died instantly while going down the road today (20mph) loud noise from stereo and then nothing.  Will not turn over only accesories will work.  Replaced ignition switch (in steering column in last 12 months), replaced all coils and ignition module in last 12 months also.  When my previous ignition module went bad the positive cable to the starter had shorted (after wet detailing) to the module and fried it.  It seems that the car did turn over when this happened the last time but I cannot remember for sure.  All sensors and relays replaced within last 20,000 miles.  Only thing I noticed today on the street when trying to see what might be wrong was a strange noise (not loud) that is comming from under or in the FPR area or very close to that area almost like a flutter when my wife would turn the key to off.  Thought it might just be the reduction in pressure when the fuel pump turns off with the ignition switch.  Probably always there but never had my ear close enough to notice.   Towing home at noon and go from there.  Also I had the electrical center (above passenger front wheel) fall down into access panel and short the primary fan relay a couple of days ago.  Bought a new relay and got the electrical center where it belongs, fan ran fine after that, but never looked under to see what might have happened with all wire connections there.  So does any of this go to the DIS?, I'm sure some of it goes to the ECM.  TIA for any replies, Dale.

When that happened to me, the alt chg wire fell off and grounded on the alt. frame. The CS-130-D alternator offers a plastic chassis on the stud side so it cant ground out as easy. it also has no external fans so in case a wire or your hand have no chance of getting hit.

no loose wires at alternator but I did find a 1/4" of sheething missing from a wire going into the DIS module.  Moving coils and module over to where battery was and the battery is headed for the trunk today.  Hopefully that wire was my problem, and this will make future tune-up/maintenance easier.

a cs-130-d alt will also make future tune-ups and maintenance easier by giving the coils the juice needed that the stocker lacks.

Thats BS. What is it with you and this alt. Do you sleep with it?

Where are the two guys that have said they have the coils/ignition module relocated.  Was one of them Curtis Walker in a cavalier?  Jeff M. or idbeast are you out there?

That was me. There's pictures on here somewhere. I am sure there are others cause I emailed a bunch of drawings out.

I used to go through coils and all kinds of electrical problems when I had that old cs-130 chassis. It is not even close to the new ones. does not even hold a candle to the new technology stuffed into the D-series.

I had a hopped up 130 that put out 150 amps but did not even charge at idle.  and I have smoked many of them over the last 5 years. Had a chrome cs-130 and it was bad-ass for about a year when I put it through hell. No one has gone through as many electric problems in a short period of time as me.

I used to have smoke coming out of the steering column and go through spark plugs like crazy, fuel pumps and wires in the gas tank melting.

That is the first thing I would do if I bought another TGP. Take off the starter and alternator and upgrade both to 2005 standards and wireloom all the fusible links so they have no chance of grounding out.

Correct me if I am wrong. I decided against the relocation of my coils.
