Then, when i went to call around for prices on the exhust (I lost the pipe after the Cat), I nearly fainted. GM lists the pipe for 200...not TOO bad, but for GM's left Tuned Turbo muffler. you will pay 450 bux!! Right is 200!! This is INSANE :evil: !! I am holding off on buyin the exhaust, but the fact is, these mufflers make a HUGE difference in the way of proper backpressure. Anybody know an aftermarket set-up or anything??

I've been looking for an aftermarket mufflers, as my stock ones are shot and I've had trouble finding a drivers side muffler that the same size(case size 10"). I'm probably just going to modify the whole drivers side and use Dynomax welded race mufflers from summit or jegs. I would dump the mufflers, but I won't pass inspection here, and since I don't have a cat(in my area they don't have emissions on pre-OBD-II cars which is sweet) I don't want my car to be too loud.
talk to your local welder or mechanic, you can nearly build your own exhaust system for 450. Just replace the 2.25 in mufflers with a magnaflow or some other straight through muffler with a perorated core. If you do the entire exhuast go to a 3in main pipe with manderal bend pipe, i'd start with the mufflers though.

What do you mean proper backpressure? On a turbo motor, exhaust after the turbo is negated as the turbo is the biggest means of backpressure/restriction in the exhaust (except maybe a clogged cat). Less restriction after the turbo the better.
The reason for the high prices, is not only the custom made fitment, but they are 100% stainless. Last I checked, borla stainless mufflers were around $150 or $200 IIRC. Regardless, I wouldn't waste my money either. Go to a custom muffler shop, they can do a great job for a lot less money.

PA has yearly inspections don't they? IMHO it really isn't too loud, its a nice sound without the mufflers. But if they require them, its a non issue.

I don't think PA has inspections. I haven't had one yet or heard anything about it. I may be wrong though.
I'm running no cat with a couple glasspacks. IMO it sounds sweet. Especially when you fire it up on a cold morning. Cracks like a V-8.

I just saw Josh was from PA and he mentioned inspections. What i was getting at is we have inspections in MD too, but its only if you sell your car. What you do to it in the meantime is up to the judgement of Johnny Law, otherwise you can get away with it.
Yeah, I'm from the lehigh valley and we have yearly inspections and as of late they have been cracking down on the garages about cars that should not pass. So a lot of garages aren't letting stuff by that they normally would let go. I have to have mufflers on my car or it won't pass inspection. Otherwise the mufflers would have been gone a while ago.
you can get 2 1/2 to 3" pipe custom bent from the cat back to straight pipes at meineke from $175-200. I wouldn't buy any exhaust parts from the dealer. FORGET MIDAS THEY ARE A RIPPOFF!!!!!!
The more back-pressure you have the longer it will take for the turbo to spool up. They have the "tuned" mufflers from GM for noise restrictions that were very tight in the late 80's early 90's, but at the same time would flow clear. Get a couple of DynoMax Turbo II mufflers, strap them on and call it a day. They are inexpensive and come with a LifeTime Warranty! 8)
I was told by an inspector here in VA that you DO NOT have to have mufflers on your vehicle to pass inspection. What you do have to have is a pipe or muffler that extends the the end of your bumper that is sealed (no holes or leaks). The only problem you can have as far as noise is from the law enforcement aka police and get an ticket for faulty equipment (due to noise levels) so its up to you.

Well its different in every state, and sometimes different depending on where you live within the state. In MD you have to have exhaust equivalent to OEM, that exits behind the rear most door. There are no specific noise restrictions, and the wording in the inspection manual is kinda vague. Id have to look again to see what the exact wording is, but usually if it has some sort of muffler and the pipes have no leaks and there is a catalytic converter the exhaust will pass. You are not allowed to have full duals unless it came that way from the factory, but you are allowed to have after cat dual tailpipes even if it wasn't original. So the after cat rule overrides the "must be OEM or equiv" rule. Its quite confusing really.

We have no emissions where I live, or at least in my county. I know that some counties have emissions in my state. I'm running straight pipes with a cat.
NAPA has a OEM replacement pair, about $49 for the right and $69 for the left, just bought a pair. My local NAPA rep checked on them, they are listed as a low-restriction 'louder than stock' exact replacement.
