Title: 172,000 Miles on Stock engine at 12 PSI Still going strong!
Post by: Tooky on November 27, 2005, 11:08:07 PM
Well guys, I havent posted in a while but my (daily driver) TGP has kept on trucking and I bought it in July 2002 with 95,000mi and now it has 172,000 mi.!  And the motor has continued to RUN LIKE A TOP.  In fact when I last compression tested the motor (about 15,000mi ago) it had perfect compression and was even closer from one cylinder to the next, than my 30,000mi Syclone motor!

Ever since about 105,000 miles I have run a TopGun 160 chip with a BoostValve.com manual boost controller for WICKEDLY fast spoolup (damn near instant), all the time.  I never touch it all year!  And it really roasts the tires!  With this small of a turbo, it hits like a Big Block in 2nd gear.  You just ease into it out of 1st, wait till the point where it won't downshift back into 1st, and roll into WOT and the car takes off in whatever direction you're pointing!  Every time I let someone drive this car, they say they can't believe that little motor makes the car run like it does.  Even my G/F giggles when she tickles the gas pedal, it's so easy with this motor because you can get 80% of the power at 40% of the throttle!

Also, this thing does not burn any oil and the oil stays quite clean between 3000 mi. Mobil1 10W-30 oil changes!

I had the stock 4T60 tranny rebuilt by a shop in Chicago at 130,000 miles and it still hits hard and runs the same as when I put it in.  So it would seem a myth, whoever said that running a manual boost controller on a 4T60 with unrestricted boost, would blow the trans..  I've got 40,000 miles of unrestricted spool on mine, is that enough? 8)

So let me give "Three Cheers" to the mighty "LG5" who has lasted the test of time and the hard beating I give it day in and day out (at least 4 WOT per day).  Same for the stock turbo whom I've got to be mercilessly overspinning!

Yeah and I only paid $1200 for the tranny build including converter, not bad eh? (I had to handle R&R seperately)

Maybe you got a good rebuild? 8)  I'm kinda scared to run a mbc on my car even though I have zero issues with it and 74K on the clock.  I will  be running one when I can afford to purchase a nice rebuild "kit" to put in my transaxle, I want to be able to run slicks......especially when I start really upgrading the car.  By the way, were your times with the mbc or the stock boost control? I'm curious to see what the variations in times between stock and manual boost control have netted different people(I've seen one guy on the other board still using the 4T60 and also using a manual boost controller running 14.4-14.5ish w/ 94-95mph trap speeds. His car has the usual mods plus an underdrive pulley and 1.6 ratio rocker arms.  My car has only trapped 91.94mph at best in the 1/4  so far, that was from my few runs last year. I ran once at the track this year in pretty cool weather, but it was really humid. I ran a new best mph in the 1/8th mile this year = 75.10 mph, but I barely trapped 91mph that night.  I think it was just a bad night to run since there were two '04 6spd GTO's not even breaking 100mph trap speeds whereas they should be a few mph quicker than that.

That's good news to hear.
I've always been curious about running a MBC but was never sure how the 4T60 would like it.
