Title: 92 gp on dirt track
Post by: fwdjarvis3 on January 03, 2006, 10:11:03 PM
i bought a 92 gp from a local salvage yard for 300, it has a 5spd 3.1v6. Now i have been told that the tranny was a hm-284, i don't know how you can tell the difference between the 284 and 282, also if anybody wants any free stuff just come on down and strip it, everything has to go anyways for the track, the motor is being replaced with a 3.4dohc, any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

well if is a '92, than it would have to be a 284....which would also mean it would have a 3.4 DOHC.  there is no such thing as a '92 Grand Prix with a 3.1/5-speed.  maybe some previous owner swapped some stuff out?

as far as the V6/5-speed Grand Prix goes:

'88-'89 - 2.8/282
'89-'90 - 3.1/282
'91-'93 - 3.4 DOHC/284

only way to tell for sure what it had from the factory is by looking at the "Service Parts Identification" sticker.  it should be on the spare tire cover in the trunk.

MG2 - 282 5-speed
ME9 - 4T60 automatic

LH0 - 3.1 (8th digit of VIN 'T')
LQ1 - 3.4 DOHC (8th digit of VIN 'X')

the gear ratios in the 284 are exactly the same .......they are setup to fit the dohc motors tq and hp specs. and it also uses a pull type slave cylinder which is more expensive to buy

282 are gear matched for the 3.1 and use a push type slave cylinder

also clutches for the 282 are about half what a 284 clutch costs
