I go a quote for how much it would cost to recover my data on my little 40g hard drive. Hows $500 sound  . Just the motor driver went out on mine. I bought a ebay HD and switched boards...thing now just flops around the arm. Got to love firmware changes. I hate Western Digital. . :(
Moral of the story...GET A BACKUP SERVER. It'll save you headaches and invaluable data.
Everywhere I've heard of is in that range to recover data as well. The cheapest I've heard is around $380 for that size drive. Not cheap, but well worth it to a lot of companies and whatnot, so they know they can get the money. This is why I run mirrored drives, so unless there is like a power surge that kills everything or something like that, I should be ok if something goes.

Before you spend that $500, take my advice and go with these guys.

I lost data on a 40gb IDE drive and it cost $375 (+ shipping) to get it back. I sent them a good working 40gb drive to copy the data on to, got it back 3 weeks later with all the data still intact!
The nice thing is they aren't a huge corporation who is only concerned about your money and not your happiness, they were great to deal with.
