Sorry for the new member, old question routine! I have a '90 TGP, with auto trans, that I bought in '94 with 9000 original mi. and now has 66,000 mi. I have meticulously maintained the car mechanically and appearance wise. But I hate to say I can't remeber ever changing the tranny fluid. I've heard if you do it with many miles on it, the new fluid viscosity could cause further problems with the tranny. I think there is some tranny fluid conditioners out there that help this process. Any recommendations on changing the fluid and consequences...T
Congrats on the NICE car. I want pics ASAP. As for the tranny, i've got the 4T60-e in my car(in sig) I just changed my fluid and put in Valvoline Max Life Dexron/Mercon ATF and a new filter. (i've got 116,800 miles and no problems)
I don't know what the TGP guys reccomend.
If it blows from changing the oil then it was already blown.
That actually happened to me, but I put in red line synthetic ATF, and let my friend drive it while I was in the pass. seat. we are on a curvy country road with it in OD, punching it through corners, with no valence panel and the ducting for the aux. tranny cooler f-ed up,no tranny temp gauge, vac. lines all leaking, no Jeff M. chip yet, and my TV cable is all streched and old.....
...I have no idea how it blew!
66,000 isn't that bad...does the fluid look burnt? Sort of a brown/maroon color or worse yet black?
If it still looks like normal tranny fluid in color just take it in and get a full tranny flush with a filter change. 8)

Why do people reccomend a full flush...i've heard nothing but bad news about them....
Does GM reccomend them?...i've never heard GM reccomend it....only tranny shops...(http://www.w-body.com/forum/images/smiles/dunno.gif)
ok even the dealers have the shitty flush machines that force atf through the tranny, that is what I did right before my tranny blew up the first time.
now I got a shop that uses on e of the only machines that use your existing internal tranny pump to pump the fluid. snap on makes the machine you want to use.
I doubt you fill ever completely flush it entirely because well...its basically impossible to completely drain a torque converter of fluid :?
Just drain it, that will be good enough, the little bits that are left will get mixed in with the new and it won't make much of a difference unless you have completely burned up the trans and its really bad, then you may as well get new trans and converter and start everything brand new fresh....
I would just do a pan drop/filter change on it, you'll get about half of the fluid in the transaxle out that way. Use Dexron/Mercon III fluid, buy Chevron brand if you can find it. If you can't locate some chevron ATF, go with Valvoline as Aweb80 suggested above. Do not add any conditioners, additives, etc. if your transaxle is functioning just fine now, they're basically bandaid fixes for when you're having certain issues and want the transaxle to hold up until you can get around to rebuilding it. With only 66K on the car, I don't think you have anything to worry about. 8)
PS: Post some pictures of your TGP if you can.
