Title: Custom downpipe???
Post by: 90TGP on September 08, 2002, 08:41:06 PM
I was wondering if my local exhaust shop could fab up a custom downpipe for the TGP? Like 2 1/2".

I know that downpipes alone add a lot of horsepower to Supra's and other turbo imports. Why not the TGP.

i imagine it would, the crush in the pipe is pretty obvious, why couldn't the factory just do it right?

what crush are you speaking of? for the most part the pipe is pretty uniform, but I really don't know what kind of gains you can expect. Most other cars suffer from sharp bends (eclipses GN's) in the downpipe that the aftermarket helps remove/improve with bigger piping. Then if you go to bigger turbo's you need bigger pipe anyway. I might be worth trying , but I honestly wouldn't expect a huge improvment or folks lining up to make you one.

i only looked at it once but i thought i saw rippled pipe where it bends down from the engine, crush bended. Maybe that's not the downpipe?

I think that may be a bit of an illusion as the pipe expands up to the turbo to house the wastegate flapper. Looking from the inside the the pipe is fairly uniform in diameter.
