I just got a laptop a couple of weeks ago in a trade with my brother, and I am looking to get setup to do my own data logging and and eventually chip tuning. I want to learn as much as I can along the way, but to start I need someone to point me in the direction of the cable and software that best suits our application.
I took the car out for a spin today to exercise it's joints and to fill/add stabilzer to the tank. It has been about 50 on average here the last week or 10 days, the roads were dry, and I just wanted 20 minutes. Man I can't wait until April. Got a bunch of bugs to work out and finally have some ambition (and $$) to do it.
Anyway what's the consensus?
I have a ALDL cble from Mastach ( www.mastach.com ) quality assembled unit and im happy with mine.
Has a ebay store also
http://stores.ebay.com/MaStach-com
there are some sites that show you how to build your own cable but thats to much work for me 8)
Also you can get the Moates USB cable setup. I have the ALDU1 and the CABL1 seen on this page for datalogging... http://www.moates.net/index.php?cPath=24_43
Works great with the TunerPro RT program.
I will be buying the Ostrich Emulation setup in spring when I start to play with the go fast part ad-ons!
So probably around $50 for a cable, how much for software? That mastach cable comes with software, but is it trial?
all the software included with the Mastach cable is trial and more or less useless.
Im using TSS Datamaster for my datalogging and i love it 8)
http://ttspowersystems.com/
you get a few free datalogs before you have to register the software then its unlimited.
here is the DL link http://www.ttspowersystems.com/software/dm350/8F/setup-8F.exe
its $100 to register it and well worth it IMO
i got my datamaster registration from here $95
http://www.akmcables.com/dss.htm
also a informative link
so again I am a complete newbie when it comes to this. I assume that USB is faster than serial, but I don't know for sure. I like the looks of the TSS datamaster and think thats the route I will be going, but still undecided on the cable. Which is better? I see on that link you posted Dave that they have a Y cable, with both I and II connectors.. will that do what I want it to do and more?
this is the cable i have
its serial port and works plenty fast for simple datalogging.....i have no experiance with the USB style so i can't offer any help on them  .

the ones listed on AKM seem to offer compatability for OBD1 (TGP compatable) and OBD2 if you have a scan tool/software that will work with it.
again i dunno forsure because i have no experiance with OBD2 stuff at this time.
if you want Datamaster registration i highly reccomend Andrew at AKM for that
email him and he will let you know all the info.
hope that helps a bit....

So to tune all I need is the ALDU1 USB-to-ALDL Converter, the CABL1 OBD1-Style ALDL Connector, and the tunerpro RT program right?
If so I'll buy it today!

no, you'll still need a an EPROM burner and a UV eraser at the very least (or skip the UV eraser and use EEPROMs). does Tunerpro RT edit .bin files and work as a datalogger? or do you need Datamaster TTS along with it? i'm kind of confused as to what Tunerpro RT can do.
Looking closer at the moates cable.... :) does that plug right into the ALDL port under the dash??
one thing i hare about mine is having to put each pin in the port individually :x
looks like a better unit....
since Craig is a member here he should give us a forum discount

Yeah Dave that helps a lot, I just picked up that cable, unfortunately I probably won't mess with it until spring time, maybe I will who knows. I assume that the Datamaster program is only for use with an OBDI vehicle.. I'm sure there is software that will allow you to read instead of using a scan tool. Oh well, this will be for my personal use and just to get oriented with this new stuff. Eventually I will try to make my own chip and dive in head first..
Something to keep in mind, maybe you could direct me to a good EMPROM burner? Do I need a blank one, or will my stocker work fine?
That version of Datamaster i linked above is only useable for the TGP and not anything else.
the datamaster build 8F for TGP only
ok you have the cable ordered, download the datamaster trial 8f for the TGP.
as for a burner i have this one
http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3081
ugly and crude but works great and simple to use its basic burn functions.
maybe someone has something similar they can reccomend??
as for chips
http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=26_38&products_id=38 from our friend Craig Moates
i use this Moates automotive memory adapter which allows no modifications to the stock Memcal and i find it works better.

ok. I will download it sometime this week sometime. I am excited to start seeing the problems I have with this car from a different pov and possibly correct things that I may not even notice are wrong. Thanks man.

Shawn...For logging you need the ALDU1, CABL1, and the TunerPro RT program. As Josh said you will need an EPROM burning station. I STRONGLY recommend replacing the stock 27C256 UV erase chip with an ATMEL 29C256 EEPROM. Makes life a touch easier to just flash and go...rather than waiting 30 minutes for the stock UV EPROM to erase before you can start to burn new info. If you have the money on hand...the OSTRICH emulator is the ultimate and considering it is $375 for a real time emulator...that is the ticket in my book. I am not using one at present, but will be in the near future.
Josh...TunerPro
RT will edit the .bin completely, it datalogs beautifully, and also allows the OSTRICH real time emulation with changes on the fly without restarting or resetting anything in the car. Save the change and it instantly loads the info to the ECM and you are done. You would need the OSTRICH to emulate...but for logging and .bin editing it is REAL NICE!
Dave...The CABL1 is a slip on ALDL plug. Just slide it on, connect with the TunerPro RT software and you are on your way. You will need to load the proper Serial < - > USB drivers, but Craig includes a nice how to install guide that took me all of 10 minutes to install the drivers.
ALL...Craig and Mark work together to make sure their products are fully compatible and have NO hick-ups. I have talked with both of them on the phone and emails. They are great guys who are not going to pull the plug on their products because someone else upsets them slightly and gives them competition!
I already have a scantool and have for a while so I have no problems logging.
Where can I get this chip you are talking about that erases quicker? (the EEPROM) Where can I get an eprom burner and how does it work (connect to the computer or what?)? And where can I get a eprom eraser and what does this stuff cost? Just looking to do it on a tight budget because I really need to do some chip work but don't want to dump much more into the STE as it is now my driver since I've moved onto a different project.
Sorry about kinda hijacking this thread but I've never really been able to find all this info...

if you have no problems logging then you already have the ALDL cable and datalogging software needed; no need to buy the same stuff twice. actually tuning the chip does not require an ALDL cable or datalogging software. tuning the chip requires .bin editing software and an EPROM burner like Pocket Programmer or the Willem programmer like Dave is using.
I have a $45 EPROM burner I got from www.mcumall.com Works great but a bit of overkill for just tuning 29c256 chips. It does many many other chips also.
I think Craig sells a burner on his site. I got my AT29c256 EEPROMS from Craig. Best price I saw on the web with many in stock. Many other sites needed to order them as no stock in house.
You will need a soldering iron with a thin pencil tip, a small pair of wire snips to cut the legs of the stock chip, and patience to replace the chip.
Shawn, the EEPROM is "quicker" because it's Electronically Eraseable Programable Read Only Memory. It just applies a funny voltage across a few pins and BAM. (Usually local to the type or a group of chips)
I'd suggest buying a few chips. I usually buy 5 or so at a time. Because, well, just suffice to say it's not hard to destroy one. Ask Mr. Canada over there. :D Well, I guess it wasn't broken, but the data was in a few "odd" spots. The specific chip in question is an Atmel 29C256 EEPROM. I got mine from moates. The Willem will be the burner I re-buy when I'm ready.
I can't say this enough people, and I'll say it till the end of time to everyone I meet. THE POCKET PROGRAMMER CAN KISS MY ASS. SO CAN THE TECH. SUPPORT BEHIND IT. IT'S BULLSHIT THAT THEY SEND YOU A 3.5" FLOPPY THAT PROBABLY COSTS MORE THAN A CD-R AT THIS POINT IN TIME, THEN IT SHITS IT'SELF AND THEY WON'T EMAIL YOU THE 1'S AND 0'S THAT WAS ON IT. YOU HAVE TO PAY $49 FOR IT. BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!! If I ever meet one of their tech. support guys, I'm mailing his body parts to his family. In baggies. And not the freezer kind. The little ones.
Shawn, you don't need an EPROM eraser if you use an EEPROM, it'll save you money there. You do have to solder in your new EEPROM in place of the old, or do what I'd suggest and get the moates adapter. It's like $30 and well worth it. If you solder in the chip get a wire wrap header to be able to re-program it.
Costs: Moates.net adapter -$35
EEPROMS: $30 for 5
Willem programmer: $50
Header: Can't remember, but IIRC like $15
Being able to modify and burn your own chips: $130 or so.
(You expected me to say priceless didn't you? Hahahahaha)
Also, on the software. To whom it may concern: I LOVE the TTS Software, I haven't worked w/ the other stuff, but I showed my Evo driving buddy a few of the logs and he nearly shit himself. We both have $1000+ Engine Management solutions and the logs look like, well, Stick Figures next to (insert favorite porn star/Model here)
It's not free, but it's VERY worth it especially compared to all of the free stuff that *was* on the market. (I'm not current so there may be better, but not at the time.) Hell, I couldn't get half of it to work. Happy tuning. :D
got my cable today, finally! Took all 14 days, but I guess I shouldn't complaing for the price, and also considering it came from Poland. Anyway, hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to play around with it. Any tips, tricks on hookup and operation?
ya the Datamaster program may not recognize the cable.....i have a fix on that within the datamaster software options if ya need.
its with the serial timing.
click this on the datamaster program.
Top left >File
>Record ALDL Data
Serial Data Acquisition box opens
Click > Options
>Advanced
>Setup Serial Communication Timing
ok there are 4 bars
you want the last one on the right >ALDL Link Timing
mine is at 196 and to get yours try 196 or up 5 or down 5 then you should get hooked up.
lemme now how it goes.
Dave
At least you got your on the first try. Huh Davie? :D
