Title: upgrade to T-bolt clamps for $50
Post by: twinturbosedan on February 05, 2006, 12:39:01 AM
i just put in an order with ATP Turbo (http://www.atpturbo.com) so i could finally replace the crappy worm gear clamps with high quality WIDE T-bolt clamps.  i'm also replacing the stock straight silicone connectors at the TB and compressor outlet.  my brother had some extra T-bolt clamps & straight silicone connectors from ATP laying around from his car projects and this let me figure out exactly what sizes of clamps and straight silicone connectors i would need.  i test fit everything before i placed my order.  you can upgrade your TGP with ATP T-bolt clamps and replace the TB & compressor outlet straight silicone connectors for $42.50 + shipping from ATP.

going from the throttle body to the compressor outlet, here is what you will need:

$6.50 - one (1) straight 3.00" silicone connector

$7.50 - two (2) 3.25" T-bolt clamps

^ this covers the throttle body to upper intercooler pipe connection

$15.00 - four (4) 2.50" T-bolt clamps

^ these clamps are used for the upper intercooler pipe-to-upper intercooler end tank connections, as well as lower intercooler end tank-to-lower intercooler pipe connections.

$7.50 - two (2) 2.25" T-bolt clamps

$6.00 - one (1) straight 2.00" silicone connector

^ this covers the compressor outlet-to-lower intercooler pipe connection.

NOTE:  while i AM replacing the straight silicone connectors at the throttle body and the compressor outlet, i will be reusing the 'accordian' hoses between the intercooler and upper & lower pipes.

while $50 may sound like alot just for 8 clamps and 2 short silicone connectors, i think it will be well worth it.  i also ordered two feet of 5/8" silicone hose for both of my cars so i can replace the stock turbo oil drain hoses.  you should consider ordering a foot (or two) at the same time to save on shipping charges.

Nice, Favorites --> Add to Favorites.....

Maybe have to get these indeed.  Can you choose what color of silicone connectors?

Oh edit, do you know what would be required to replace the "Accordian" pipes?  I figure if I'm going to do everything else, I may as well look into replacing those too.....

as for the silicone couplers, you can get them in blue, black or red from ATP.  i got black.  i think the silicone oil drain hose is only available in blue.

i don't think ATP has anything that could be used to replace the two accordian hoses.  they do have hump hoses but i don't think they would be long enough.

Alright no big deal, I was just curious, they work fine......I don't need the drain hose, I already have one, its probably the same stuff as it is also in blue only.  It is nice line though, we have used in on my car, we used that same kind of stuff for the turbo water lines, we even use it on the Trans-Am.  Its definitely a lot better than stock stuff

Are you really going to pay $24.00 a ft for 3/8" line hose?  The industrial stuff we get for my car isn't nearly that much, its some really good rubber hose, much better than any rubber fuel or coolant hose you are normally going to get.  We have always used it for cooling, and even oil which silicone hoses can't.  I just got 5 feet of it for my new water line, plus some good heat insulating stuff, 2/3 feet of it, and the total for the 2 was like $18 total.  Just another idea to look into instead of that silicone stuff.  Even though they probably have silicone hose to take care of the "Accordian" hose

i guess i like the thought of using the same type of hose that ASC/McLaren used.  i've been all over the place (locally) and i could not find anything 'heavy duty' in 3.8" ID.  i really don't want to use standard heater hose.  i'd likely need 2ft of it (for both of my cars) and damn that IS expensive.  not sure what i'll end up doing.  maybe you could get me some of the same hose you are using

Well, how long *2ftx2 right* and what color?  I know they have atleast red and black.  Hell I have the old red one off my car just sitting, and a new red line too for that matter.  Its definitely 5/8" and up to 300 PSI with a flame resistant cover.  Its definitely not standard heater hose.  You need a pair of damn good dikes to cut the stuff, we ended up using a damn knife sawing on it.  Then we just used barbed ended swivel 90* fittings and a screw in fitting on the turbo and it works great.  Make sure you have it to length, once the hose goes on the fitting, it doesn't come off...

Oh yeah, we get it from a place called "EVCO House of Hose"  They do a bunch of industrial hose stuff, we get all of our lines there, they even pre-make to length hoses too.  I tried a search for Industrial hose stuff in Wyoming for you, but I didn't find much.

got the silicone couplers and T-bolt clamps installed today :)

only problem i ran into was that the 3" silicone coupler at the throttle body was too long and i had to cut about an inch off of it otherwise the upper intercooler pipe would have been too far out to bolt to the LIM and it wouldn't have matched up with the upper intercooler end tank.  fixed that quick by putting the silicone coupler between two pieces of wood in a bench vice and carefully cutting it with a carpet knife.  i simply made it the same length as the stock TB coupler was.

you are supposed to hot knife it. either that since the blue/orange stuff is high heat and a blow torch and utility knife are not even good enough. then you can use a 4 inch cut off wheel and get a clean cut.

What were the Tbolt size for the Compressor to a Cone filter? I didnt see that up there, i finally orderd my K&N and dont wanna take any risks with a worm gear clamp

(also whats so different between worm and tbolt clamps, they both seem to be the same sorta metal band that would cut into the K&N rubber, whats so special? Can i still use a Worm gear just dont over tighten it?)

I've used worm clamps since I started using a K&N.  The first one I over tightened and it didn't last too long, it doesn't need to be really tight.

old thread....but I just checked this out for my car, and ATP wants $45 to ship $42.50 worth of stuff LOL

I'm gonna price it out at a local performance shop.

I keep popping the clamp off of the lower intercooler accordian hose.
