Title: very weird problem
Post by: tyroelite on February 11, 2006, 06:02:41 PM
Okay, so my EGR hose rusted out and broke.  The exhaust gasses melted through my vaccum lines (most of them at the TB). So, I decided to replace the EGR with what I thought would work but ended up breaking that too.  So, what I did was to create a cap for the bung on the exhaust manifold and just attached the EGR to the intake with the hose broken where it was.  So, I replaced all my vac lines (I think they are right) and put it all back together.  Now, when I punch it, it works great and makes lots of power, unil it gets to the first black line on the positive side. At that point, the boost cuts back to the second black line down in the green and stays there.  If I give it more gas, it doesn't rev higher or anything, just stays there until I either lift or it shifts gears or something to jog it and then it will start making boost again until the same mark. When it cuts back, it sometimes seems like when the computer cuts fuel bc of over boost and sometimes it seems like it just bogs way down.  So, anybody got some good ideas what cold cause these symptoms?? THis one's got me puzzled.

sure the vacumm lines on the TB didn't pop out right?

just covering the basics...

maybe the heat got to some of the wiring of the sensors on the TB...

the vac lines are still all in good.  the wires for the sensors as far as I can tell all seem fine.  Before I "replaced" the EGR, it didn't have the problem but did have obvious problems with the car stalling and such.

For vac lines, I have one running from the TB to the FPR t fitting and back to the MAP sensor. Another goes to a line that goes off to near th brakes somewhere, had a plastic wire loom type covering on it.  Another goes from the big port to the square block thing that is attached to the bracket on the back of the intake manifold. (solenoid I think?) and the last goes to the EGR.  Is that right??

You put a bung on the exhaust pipe but have a wide open EGR? Did you do an EGR delete on the chip? If not you are losing boost pressure through a 5/8" hole when the EGR is commanded open during higher boost levels.

Why do you think the pipe was connected to the EGR before?  8)

as far as vacuum routing this might help:

i think Matt posted this awhile back.  i just hosted it on my own server.

That would do it too, I thought I was reading it wrong...

When my EGR tube broke, I used the screw on cap off the crossover side, threw some dimes in it and bolted it down tight. Put a piece of sheet metal between the plenum and EGR.

I intend on replacing the pipe but it was kinda short notice..

yes. I do have the EGR hose open(on the intake side).  I was thinking that might be the problem but I don't know the conditions of when the EGR opens well enough to know if that is my problem.  I also tried disconnecting the EGR from the manifold and that didn't help.... didn't try actually disconnecting the EGR electrical conector though... so don't know what that would mean... It also was an EGR from an NA car so I don't know if that would have an impact... I think they are all the same.

PS- I hope this make sense bc im pretty wasted right now. so... good luck.

You disconnected the EGR from the manifold entirely and just left the open hole there?

no, the EGR is attached to the manifold, the hose coming off the EGR that would have gone down to the exhaust manifold is what is open.

uhhh that would be a massive exhaust leak, then when the EGR opens boost would just fly out no?

I think it would be... I am kind of leaning towards that being my problem... what are the parameters that tell the EGR to open?  It was my understanding that the EGR didn't open when the car was under full throttle. Would taking the vac line for the EGR out of the TB have an effect on it? or what about unpluging the EGR?

You could try unplugging it.. or stick a piece of sheetmetal between the EGR and the plenum, so that there are no intake leaks...

okay, I replaced the EGR but still have the problem with it cutting boost at weird times.  The boost guage never gets up high enough that I think it would be the chip.  Any other ideas what it would be?

a few things you can do to ensure there is no leaks is use some fuel line for the boost line from the turbo to the boost controller. holds up better than the stock plastic crap. I also just dropped a whopping $22 for a new boost controller from ac delco. came with the little sponge on it to keep dust out..
