Title: Retaining use of stock steering wheel stereo controls

I apologize if this has already been brought up, I really do.

Is there anyway, a kit or something, that I can use my steering wheel controls for the stereo if I replace the deck with an aftermarket? My dad has an aftermarket in his Jeep, and when he bought it they told him that they had bought a kit that allowed him to still be able to use his stock wheel controls...yeah, I didn't know Jeep Grand Cherokee's had steering wheel controls either until he bought it. But back to the matter at hand lol.

Also if there is a way, how hard is it to rig up?

How easy is it to hook up?  Do *all* the steering wheel buttons work with a new stereo?  Any new stereo?  Can anyone here vouch for actually having this unit in their TGP?

I've wanted one of those sweet MP3-CD-RW-capable decks for a long time but the steering wheel thing has been keeping me from it.

I will be putting one in my car in about a month...when I finally have time on the weekends to do work on the cars.

I know of a friend who put one in a 92ish GP and pretty much anything could be "learned" into the converter box that you wanted to do as long as the headunits remote could do it.  8)

Exactly right Kenny. Just make sure you have a remote for your headunit, and that you position the IR sender where it can see the IR reciever on the headunit.

I had one installed in my old TGP and it worked out pretty slick.

Ohhh, so the CD Deck has to have an infrared remote?  What if it doesn't have any remote?

Then it won't do you any good.
If your deck supports a remote control, all you need to do is buy one, or find a friend who has a similar deck w/ a remote that you can borrow to program the unit.

When I upgraded my TGP sound system many many many years ago.(1996)I used the old head unit(tape player)and added some rca conveters.I went from the head unit to the rca conveters to the amps and then to the speakers.That way I retained the use of the fade and balance controls.I upgraded all my stock speakers with boston acoustics and then added some 12 inch boston competition subwofers in the trunk.For power I used 2 phoenix gold MS 275(1 for each sub)and an alpine V-12 for the front,mid and rear highs.A year or two later as cds became more popular(a necessity) I added a 100 dics cd changer and thats the last time I had to mess with the sound system.It sure cost a WHOLE lot of money back then( and even now) but I far as I'm conserned it was money well spent! :D  Good luck    Later
