Title: boost guage
Post by: one_fast_prix on March 05, 2006, 01:21:34 PM
i don't think anythings wrong with the guage persay, just trying to understand what the blue section or neg section is, under my understanding its vacuum pressure and if so why is vac measured in negative.  i'm also in the blue, when i'm at idle it's just above the very bottom of the scale and through normal driving i'm always in the blue unless i floor it, and then i barely come into the orange,  you mean to tell me i'm only then making boost?  just picked the car up in jan and looked in the owner's manual and i didn't see anything about it all, even in the turbo supplement.

That gauge is not accurate. It is a "what the ECM thinks it sees" type gauge.

What chip do you have in your car? Is it stock or Jeff M aftermarket?

If you are running stock I do not think they go much above the second orange bar. That is and around 8-9 PSIG. If you want more boost you will have to purchase or build a chip for the car.  8)

i always thought the gauges were wrong becuase of a bad signal or some other physical problem.....cause my gauge barely moves but if i datalog it the ecm is still telling me im making 10-12 psi at full boost!

I am beggining to think that my chip might already have been replaced, wish there was a way I could tell. At WOT, the boost guage moves almost all the way to the top, and almost pegs out. Thought only the Jeff M chips did that?

Well if the chip was not done...then you have a leaking wastegate controller circuit, or the wastegate solenoid is not getting the power signal to open. 8)

Well, maybe I need to be a little more specific about what its actually doing. In first gear WOT, it goes to the 3 line in the orange, shift drops it by a bar, and then second gear it climbs, fairly quickly, to almost full bar. As far as I can tell both the wastegate controller and soleniod are working. I have no SES lights, and when I pop off the gas, I do hear the excess boost bleeding off (K&N filter makes it so I can hear it).

I do think I might have to take my cluster out to check the connections thou, my boost guage doesnt always work unless I tap on the top of the dash.

Edit for my fat finger spelling..

If ur gauge is maxing out you would THINK that the OVERBOOST FUEL CUT OFF(8.36 atmk)would throw a trouble code and the ecm would pull boost. It's the ecms way of telling you somethings wrong with the wastegate system. If ur not havin problems like that ur gauge could be wrong(imangine that)or ur chip has been modifed. 8) Hope this helps,Later

Is there a way of finding out for sure if the chip has been replaced. I am about to buy a chip, and I dont want to own 2 if I dont need them LOL...

I am pretty sure that any of the Jeff M chips have a sticky over the UV erase window that will say what chip he created. Possible that the sticky has come off and you need to look closer.

Otherwise unless a previous owner did chip work there will be a shiney foil like sticker over the UV erase window...saying something like ATMK or AZRC, etc.

You can always pick up a chip burning station and read the chip. I bit more expensive than most wish to get invlved with...but that is the easiest way to be exactly sure what is in your car.

As far as the wastegate control circuit I was thinking high altitude. Up here you can unplug the controller and not hit a 9lbs boost cut. DO NOT DO THAT AT SEA-LEVEL!!    8)

No sticker at all. :o There has to be a sticker over the uv window or the chip COULD erase itself.I know it sounds impossable(inside a computer with no light)) but I have had it happen to me a few times. If the chip has a uv window you had better cover it with some tape or something. If theres no uv window you have an aftermarket eprom.Does it have any part #s on it?

Ok, I took some pics of my chip today, and also looked at the coding on it. It says ACDELCO AFAU with no other stickers on it.

Still doesnt help to find out if it is a Jeff M chip, which one of his chips it is LOL, but maybe this will be a start..

Nope, not one of mine, looks like a stock chip, sorry.  To test real quick (start with a cold engine then drive for about 3 minutes) with the wastegate unplugged, punch it in first gear real fast, don't leave it there/foot down for too long, first gear is all you need and not even all the rpms, will be a short test, should hit some kind of fuel cut damn soon with the speed at which these turbos will spool without some sensable traction control in the chip, if not then someone did the chip and if no one here lays claim, I would be very concerned about running it!  Plug wastegate back in now :icon_lol:  BTW, this test assumes an upgraded air filter, or none and a short trip on a clean dirt free road only :icon_exclaim:

As for the boost pressure indicated on your dash, yea it should show that you got boost, but never use to decide more than that :icon_lol:.
