Title: Head light trim, what to do?
Post by: Prospeeder on April 01, 2006, 11:09:23 PM
Ok, Iv searched and havent found much, i painted mine and theyve started to chip off again after a very short time, we even roughend the glass up abit with 800 grit sand paper.

Now, whats a real long term solution for this? Getting acid etching for the glass and then painting or sand blasting? Getting rougher paper? Some kind of deca or sticker sort of thing?

I had always thought that if you were to use glass etching to get a true rough surface it would allow for some pretty good paint adhesion. I have never tried it myself although mine are in need of it too! ;)

Im thinkin of getting them sand blasted at my autoshop, but i dunno how thick the glass is, im not 100% sure how to take out the headlights, and do i have to re-align them afterwords? cause mine are perfect right now

If you are going to sandblast them I would highly suggest you remove the headlight glass from the alignment chassis to keep from getting silica sand beads in the adjustment worm gears. I would soak the worm gears in some Tri-Flow before you attempt to adjust them. They most likely have locked up some from age. You don't want to break those because you will have fun finding replacements. Spray Tri-Flow in where the adjuster shaft goes into the 90* worm gear. Slowy and easy work the shaft back and forth until it moves freely. Took me about 20 minutes to get the TGP adjuster to finally free up. With Tri-Flow in there it makes it nice and easy. ;)

If you have a shop or a spot on the wall that you can mark the wall it will make aligning them after the fact much easier.

Oh thanks, how many bolts hold the headlight assembly in? I can see 2 from above, is that all?

4, iirc, but I can't remember where how the last two are oriented. I remember it was a pain in the ass though. pretty sure you need to remove the turn signals too, if you haven't already.

I could see vinyl, but dark tint would probably allow light to bleed through.

I think there are 4 bolts. Two you can see from the top and then two that are buried under the top of the bumper cover.

4 bolts, 2 on the bottom, 2 on the sides, 2 horizontal, 2 vertical....obviously we all know the easy ones...the hard ones are well, a PITA....

They are just next to the fender and just next to the foglight side....getting a socket on them is basically impossible.  A wrench works, but a pain, and time consuming, oh and to make it even better, generally you can't turn them out with your fingers once they are loose, since they are to hard to get....damn!!!!  Ah it was fun pulling the glass headlights out of the jy car with SNOW everywhere.... :icon_rolleyes:

I agree with the tri flow, I use the big old aerosol cans like candy :icon_lol: that stuff is excellent for TGPs.
