On my Blazer!!!
The TGP is holding up fine *crosses fingers*
97 4.3W motor, towing a firebird home on NYS 17 through the hills east of Binghamton. Its not even my car, it's a friends. I don't understand it. I had maybe 1500 miles on my oil change, it was full, coolant was fine, never got over 210 which is about running temp for that engine. I'll be pulling the engine this week to find out exactly what went wrong but its knocking, it quit on the highway at about 50 mph up hill. Got over the crest and pulled over. Starts a bit hard too so there may be cylinder damage as well. It's not smoking or anything but right before it quit the oil pressure dropped way down, but now it comes back up, just knocks under load. I'll do a compression check to see if the top end is ok, it's not leaking coolant or any other fluids besides tranny from the pinion seal on the tranny. Oh well, shouldn't have tested a 112k motor through those hills (Catskill Mountains).
Any tips on diagnosis before I yank it to find out what the knock is I'd appreciate it.
Wish me luck.
If you lost oil pressure then most likely you lost a bearing or two or three or six. :icon_eek:
If you lost oil pressure you can easily assume that you lost the motor especially if it was under load. I mean you can try to get lucky and replace the bearing that most likely spun...but the others are damaged also. Take care of it all at once or do it three or four times. ;)
Well got a 78k replacement for $700 including the $50 core, so I will take this other one apart and rebuild the bottom end and sell it on Ebay or something. It's gotta be worth $400 with a resurfaced crank and bearings. Started tearing into it today, this is a much harder job than the TGP was, much less room, if you can believe that, and the exhaust bolts and studs on the y pipe were a whore to break loose, 3 of them are toast so I'll be replacing those.
Did the intakes on this new motor today, will swap the water pump as mine only has 10k on it or so, p/s pump as well, hopefully this thing runs good and doesn't give me any grief, I DO NOT want to do this twice.
Man I wish I could change the water pump and spark plugs on all my engines while they are sitting on the ground, it would make life a lot easier and make for a lot less bloody knuckles. :icon_cool:
