Title: Fuel problomes
Post by: Toomanycars on May 04, 2006, 04:38:25 PM
Ok so spring/summer is here and its time to DRIVE ... well as some of you know I have a few cars.. But I really wanted to drive the tgp this year..Now I own 3 tgps one 89 and two 90s .. all three are red ... anyway I have the motor pulled from the 89 and have been slowly building it up and I have one 90 that I plan to leave stock for now and just drive.. the problem was that it needed the turbo rebuilt.. But I plan to upgrade the turbo on the 89 so i pulled that t25 and put it on the 90 ...witch brings me to my problem... I put the turbo on and checked everything twice, toped off all the fluids and started her up..Ran great... reved nice idle is ok no smoke... so I let it sit there running for about 10 mins on top of a tarp to check for any leaks and there seems to be no visable leaks .. So after sitting for about 20 mins now at idle I'm satisfied that everything is ok and pull out of the shop for the first test drive..I drive down the road turn around drive back with no problems.. But when I go for a second trip down the road I floor it and it revs great gets the boost up and falls flat on its face almost stalling like it has no fuel..So I turn around and try again same problem ... pull it back into the shop and called my buddy at the local shop and he brings over a computer to see whats up .. It says that its the injector circut and he tells me that normally means that an injector is bad... I pulled the rails fpr and the injectors off the 89 witch ran great before being pulled.. I put them in and try it again with the same results ....So now I'm thinking its the fuel pump not keeping up....but before I drop the tank I figured I would ask for everyons opinion........

P.S has new plugs, wires , o2 , tps...

Does it sputter or feel like it is trying but just can't?

Does it feel like you let off the throttle but you didn't?

What is still stock on the outside of the motor? ie: Air Box and intake, cat converter, mufflers, ect.

Let me know...Kenny :icon_cool:

So you have the stock airbox and intake tube on the turbo?

I think Kenny, your thinking the same thing I am, fuel cut or restricted intake.

Tomanycars. That's a fact  Anyhow if you keep it floored does it cutout and come back on again within a couple seconds and then repeat the situation over and over? Does the check engine light come on when it cuts out. Might have to cut out 2 or 3 times to trigger the light and the light may come on while cutting out or right after your just cruising so keep an eye on it. Allso note what your boost gauge is reading right before it cuts out.

Take the hose off the front of the turbo. (air inlet) Make sure the lines to the turbo, wastegate and wastgate solenoid are attached and the wires to the WGS are attached. Go drive it. If it still does it take the line from the turbo and hook it directly to the wastgate eliminating the WGS. Be carefull it's going to be hot. If you have access to pressurezid air you can check your WG by applying air. The rod should start moving at around 7#and be fully open at 8 to 10#. While doing the pressure test listen for air leaking out of the little hole on the back of the WG. Post back your results.

hey Jud, I am more confused after reading what you said, never heard of swapping wires and lines around like that and expecting it to help? you want to get it right the way it should be. which theres only one way thats right. agreed?  compressed air that you are supposed to gauge? HUH? air leaking from what little hole?  the boost controller is only like 20 bucks, go buy a new one with the little foam square on it if thats what we are testing.

And never go thrash on it till it throws a code, just put some octane booster in, and keep checking for leaks. it is ridden with leaks, and they wont go away until he gets the heat under control first.

Check the fuel pressure at the schrader valve.
See what pressure you have when you turn on the key without trying to start engine.
If you have a long hose on the Fuel Pressure Gage, you can tape the gage on the windshield and
see what pressure you have going down the road and WOT.

ok sorry for not metioning that there is no air box .. I never put it back on.. I havent driven the car today but I will here in a minute .. When i wot it peeks then seems to act like theres no gas or its flooded if I dont let off.. If I floor it and let off when it cuts out it coomes right back and dose it agian..If i floor it and dont let off it spits and sputters for a secon and then comes back
