Title: Any computer geeks out there?
Post by: TurboGTU on May 12, 2006, 03:28:50 AM
heres the thing. I have an old KP6-BS dual prosessor motherboard with 2 PII 400s, mmx,384mb of Pc100s and all that. The thing can be overclocked to about 500mhz each with a catche size of 512kb. FSB originaly is 100mhz to 133mhz if my memory serves me right. Im sure its more when its over clocked to about 200. Replacing some old cappaciters on thise board as we speak.

I don't know if I should use this setup with win xp/NT or if I should use a AMD 7( socket A 462) board. Prosessor I have right now as a spare is a AMD D750AUT1B with a pethetic 64kb, 200mhz FSB.

The boards I have are a Biostar M7VIG 400 with a VIA KM266 PRO. north bridge, supports 333mhz FSB. The other is a ASRock K7VM2 with a VIA KM266 noth bridge, supports 266mhz FSB...both motherboards have the same VIA VT8235 south bridge, and both have overclocking.

My AMD doensn't work on the Biostar, but works on the ASRock. I wouild like to buy a faster prosessor but biggers L1,L2 is about 256Kb for either a Duron, Athalon, Sempron. 512kb Sempron seem like a expensive piece.

I always thought FSB was a true masure of speed...But I find it not to be the case. The Gateway PC im using right now has 400mhz FSB..2.6ghz and the thing works like the CPU is working at 300mhz. BTW..memory is working at 266mhz and they are PC3200s  :icon_evil:. It has no AGP slot just PCI slots (wish it was express though  :icon_sad: ) I just gave this PC to my little bro for his school and games.

My oldest brother and uncle sweare by the dual core motherboards. But yet I don't see them run NT or xp which support multi task...unlike Dos based Os 95,98, me. I would like to build one of thise for myself and sell the other..

Have you all got eny experiance with a dual core motherboard with PII Vs a single PIII ,P4.

Any of you overclocking?

I can't offer you a whole lot of help, but, I have done some overclocking on a dual Processor board with PII's and it worked ok, but I've always preferred a single Processor, because it "seemed" to run a pentium 3 500  faster then 2 pentium 2 300s.

As for running Operating systems, I'm running Windows XP with a pentium 3 600 and 192 MB of Ram, And I must say that I have hardly any problems.  Although I don't do much data heavy work.

I've heard good things about AMD Processors.

Can't tell you much more than that, I've never gotten that in depth with computers, I built mine and I'm very Happy with it. :icon_biggrin:  The Price was right too. :icon_mrgreen:  Can't beat free parts from school

Not sure if thats the answer you were looking for,
but i hope it helps,
Mitch

Well the faster board was a dead one. It took out my new 1.3g Duron. I then tried my old 750 on the other board I had and it only went into bios boost and freeezed. Nothing else. SO I trashed the two processors into pieces. I got $30 and bought a 1 g Atholon, 256kmem. and put the older board together. Works good. 233FSB, 256mem, 64K AGP card wish S-vid , video out. Not bad. Its a keeper for now.

THe Dual core dinosour is preatty good. Ran some DVDs and Played some NFS games on it that required 900Mhs and worked good. I put it in the car to datalong the car..but its too dam bulky. I'll prob just keep it also but put it the living room for the kids or parents to mess around with.  :icon_lol:.

Oh well. Now im working on reviving a old laptop I bought for poket change.
