Mmmmkay SO i got a Working 99 Grand Prix CD player with equalizer, and I got it to fit, sorta, i cut off the side mounts and put it in, but the back has a part to acomodate the CD and sticks out too far for the whole Trim to fit correcty, did anyone here figure out what to do, or how did the factory TGP CD players fit? they must be the same size. How did any of you do it?
As far as I know, no one has installed that style of CD player in any of our cars.
I had originally wanted to do something like that, and my plan was to cut mounting holes in the top and bottom on the new deck's chassis so I could re-use the old radio's factory mounting points. Plus, those CD players are deeper than the older delco radios. They all shared the same chassis.
You could always cut out the back of the radio housing for a little more depth (and I mean a 'little'). Good luck with this one, unless your good with a dremel I don't see any other way of mounting that deck in to our cars.
shit, that sucks, how much is a little for space if i cut out the back? Think it would be enough? whats the material just plastic or metal? cause im not much into hacking up my car.
You might gain a 1/4" if even that. It's just plastic, but there's a steel support pipe that runs right through the middle of it. Chances are good that even if you did cut out the back part, the CD player would hit the steel support pipe.

Well i came up with something, how do you think it looks? No cutting nessesary! Just redrill the holes for the Trim piece and put the little threaded tabs in and put some rubber stops to wedge the player in and your good, also it seems they made it soo u loosen to bolts for the heater controls and u can just slip it farward and just re tighten it, so everythings flush and looks good. One problem, it doesnt dim, and its at the minimum dim setting from deafault it seams and is reaaally hard to see the buttons at night, anyone know the pinout to change for that to work? Other than that it works GREAT!!!
Also in this pic i didnt have it all put together, so theres a slight gap at the top, but it will be gone when i install it all the way

No skipping, shit i hit it and put it upside down and sideways and it doesnt skip, i just had to make sure so if i did need more anchorage, but nope, i havent made it skip once! Cool i actually did something first that others might try :icon_biggrin:
Ok so i went for a drive, over speedbumps, did some hard braking, turned kinda fast, and accelerated fast and it didnt skip a beat
good work! now if you could get the steering wheel controls to work with it, then this should be a sticky thread.

Was this a "plug & play" deal or did you do some splicing also?
It uses the same harness and wire config, only difference should be in the backlighting and dimmer wires.
yea the dimmer doesnt work, i was hoping some1 knew the pinouts for it, i swear a guy with a blue Lumina on Wbody put one in and repinned the dimmer, but some1 would have to search that for me/us. Your have to break the tab off one of the plugs, my TGP had 2 plugs instead of 1 and for it to all work i had to break the tab off the small blue one. Without it the rear speakers dont work. But this gave the stock speakers quite a nice boom boom, i didnt expect stockers to sound as good as they do
careful there with those paper speakers. they blow out with just a little bit more power than stock. they can handle a lot of mid/high treble a lot easier than some of the lower frequencies. jl makes a stock interface for factory stereo HUs. I never used one but saw them on their web site. or use inputs off the 6x9 wires, some amps have line inputs (you just run the back speaker wires to the amp for the signal) and you could run a 4 channel amp; 2 for the 6x9s, 2 bridged to the subwoofer.
that would allow you to save the stockers and tune the bass down on the eq. and maybe turn the amp gain up for the woofer to compensate. stock 6x9s sound pretty sweet with lots of power and the light weight paper cones on the 4x6s can put out some crisp mid/highs. with a good amp that has a crossover network can do a small sub and the rear speakers no problem.
The stockers are actually 2 way speakers (even the 4x6's). Each of them has their own seperate tweeter in addition to the woofer, which makes the high's much more defined. Especially when you get a decent amplifier behind them.
I'll have to dig out my pictures of the speakers with the felt covers cut away.

I was thinking of doing this because I could still utilize the stock steering wheel controls...but I decided to save money and just leave it in my 99 GTP and put an extra aftermarket one in.
The steering wheel controls in the TGP or STE will not work with that style of radio. The radio that Prospeeder installed uses a newer databus for the steering wheel controls than the original TGP/STE controls use.
This stereo is in my pontiac 6000 now and the dimmer workes with it, you can adjust the dimmer with the dial.
