Title: First time ever at the track, for me and the TGP!! **UPDATE**
Post by: pontiac6ksteawd on September 26, 2006, 11:15:23 PM
So my first time to the track, never raced or anything befor. So dont laugh at me alright? I am only going to post my times cause this was a test and tune night, and every car I lined up against was a 10 sec car. Needless to say, I was way outta my league on the competition... I had my rear tires at 50 PSI and my fronts at 34 PSI except for my last run. Trunk completely empty except for spare tire, jack, tire iron, wifes purse, and jumper cables. I also did not do any type of burn out, this was going around the water slick. My scanner broke when the wife tried cleaning the glass, so it may be a bit befor I get the slips posted.

1st run... Not to bad, they had to clean the track after someone blew a oil line on the start line and left oil from start to finish. It was about 80 degrees. St Louis Elevation (not sure what the feet is).

1/4        16.155
1/4 mph  87.37

6th and final run... My second best run. Dropped my front tire pressure down to 24. No more spin. Also red lighted, but just barely.
RT         -.003
60'         2.228
330        6.233
1/8        9.655

1000      12.659
1/4        15.237
1/4 mph  86.98

All in all, not a bad night for a first timer. And the first time for the TGP. Dont forget my mods are really simple. Just a K&N cone on the turbo. Jeff M TG160 Chip and thermostat. L36 injectors. Thats it.

15.1 isn't too bad, your trap speed seems low for your modifications though Brian. Are you sure the chip you have a is a TG160 and not the "stock performance 160?"  Most TG160 cars usually go 90mph or a bit higher if @ a track that is no more than 2,000 or so feet above sea level. Maybe you have a small boost leak or some other issue that is holding the car back a little...Want me to add your time to the 1/4 mile page? ;)

That works if you would like mfewtrail. Looks like I get to be about 11th on the quater. And 3rd on the 1/8.

I think my tranny is dieing. But I might also have a boost leak. I will be checking over the car this weekend to make sure I didnt break something. I can only assume that I have the TG160 chip. I bought it from Skalor, and he says he bought it from JeffM. So, I am just taking skalors word for it. Dont have any reason to doubt him.

I'm sure it's a TG160 is skalor says it is. Did you race at Mid-America Dragway(did you race Saturday the 23rd? If so, what was the approximate time of your 15.1 run, I'll look up the weather for that date/time and convert your times for density altitude to see if they would explain the slightly low trap speeds ;))? If so, the elevation is 550'. Your x-over has been repaired, right? Is the stock cat original on the car?

http://www.wunderground.com/ has past weather conditions for the past few years(temps, etc. broken down into 24hr increments), good info for correcting timeslips :icon_mrgreen:. Then plug all the info in here.
http://www.smokemup.com/auto_math/da_to_da.php and you can correct the times for DA. ;)

It was today, 9-26-06 that I raced. It was at Gateway Raceway in East St Louis IL. Time was 9:09 PM. Temp was 68* at 7:00 if I am readin it right. I have no idea what the altitude is over there. I dont have a subscription over on that smokemup site, and I dont need another one LOL. So if you wouldnt mind??

EDIT: yes my x-over has been rebuilt. And it has the Stock Exhaust for now.

Oops, I meant to post this density altitude link(no subscription required).
http://www.modulardepot.com/density.php

Gateway Raceway = 407' elevation.

9pm  = 58*F, 80% humidity, Barometric pressure - 29.93

Correcting your 15.1 ends up w/ 15.01 @ 87.9. I think that 80% humidity probably hurt your trap speeds a bit more than that though.

Im quite happy with a flat 15 (almost). But I agree with the humidity, it was muggy as all get out, luckily with all the burnouts, and gas fumes in the air, there were no bugs!

PICS!!!!

Drop the spare tire & Jack.  (read everything from the trunk) :icon_eek:

I also used to lower the pass side tire 4 additional pounds because it was the side that allways spun

Good runs for the first time out.

Hey, pontiac6ksteawd:

Cool photos from the drag strip, especially the bottom one.  Verrrrrrrrrrry nice.  : )

I noticed that your reaction times seem to vary.  ; )  Some are very good, but 1.645 seconds?  LOL

RE: the open hood. Well, you won't need a parachute.  ; )

Thanks again for the photos and time slips.

No probs on the pics and things. I dont see the 1.645 you mention, my worst was .647. I am not consistant yet, but as mentioned, it was my first time to the track, so reaction times arent all that,,,,YET!!

I am just glad the hood didnt flop back at 80-90 MPH going down the track!!

Isee.  That guy with 1.645 reaction time finished in left lane at 131mph in about 10 seconds.  I guess he was giving you a rolling head start.  LOL

If that's what I am seeing,  it's nice to see timing for both lanes on your time slips.  I hadn't seen those before, but haven't been to a drag strip since I drove in World Points Finale for AHRA in Kansas City before 1970. My drag racing is usually up to about 30mph, now. That's all I need aaround the city. : )

I drove a Chevelle SS called The Hombre back then.  With 339 c.i. and two barrel, I ran about 12.40 and 94 mph. Lost final race at Green Valley, then at Kansas City. We'd had a team of 5 or six cars running earlier that year. Were down to two cars for the finals. The other was a 4-bbl 396 that ran in the low 11's.

But the car I lost to had holes drilled in everything on the car. He was exactly on the hp/weight limit for the class. The drilling had allowed him to exactly adjust his weight for the class.  Even with one 3-4 carlength holeshot, he still got me at the big end, running 12.30 a national class record. I had just set national record on my previous run.

14.8@91mph

That would be respectable... I am hoping for some lower times. Around 14.2. My car is launching like a bad MOFO now. just loosing it in the top end. Need to get my intake port matched. I may endup going out and putting a complete exhaust on it this week 2.75 inch since mandrel isnt available..

You're still running a Jeff M. chip aren't you? If so, I would expect no better than mid 14's with a GREATTTTT launch. ;)

Taylor Spiral Core 8mm wires
New AC Delco O2 Sensor
Yokohama R540GS tires
Completely new vacume set from the TB all over under the hood.
Coolant tank relocate.
Thinking about going out and getting some Accel Coil Packs today to go with the wires..
Also thinking about going out and getting that exhaust work done today..

Stick with the AC Delco coilpacks Brian. They're more than adequate for any car on this board(just look at the power the 2nd Gen crowd makes on the stock ones ;) ) and they typically last a lot longer than aftermarket ones from what I've seen.

EDIT: If for any reason you actually need new coilpacks, Advance Auto sells them for ~$40/each with a year warranty.

I never updated this thread.. LOL.. Well, I was on my way to the track, brought the wife with me, made it about 3 miles from the track, and my check guages light turned on, Temp guage sitting just below the red mark, in rush hour traffic. I turned off the key in traffic, and coasted to the shoulder. Upper radiator port had popped its copper bead, and spit the pipe, and hose, out. Tow truck home.. But that was back in 2007, so its all been fixed now, just havent had time to take it to the track, since its sitting in storage some 1000 miles away.

Oh sorry I just haven't had the experience of a TGP with working A/C yet. I'd like my black TGP to have the ac work again on it but that project is lower down on the list.

Oh Yea. I fixed the AC in mine a couple years back. I wrote a upgrade thing about it. Its somewhere around here. The AC fill port is in a totally WTF?! spot. I created a new one with a new Drier/Accumulator tank with a fill port in it. Makes the world so much nicer!

I don't know much about those things and never really believed in them but the best way to really test that gadget would to take it to a track and compare readings. Other than that the hp reading sounds a little high for the time you got.

It was probably a G-Tech meter, where you plug in your vehicle weight.  I used to used one, they are easy to minipulate.  To get accurate readings you must have the conditions as close to the same as possible each time.

I verified a few HP gain from such things as wraping charge pipes from IC, the 1:6 rockers, and gains from the AC fin MOD.
