Yup!!!
Blew the Turbo CS Engine up on the way back from Toronto this weekend..... :icon_rolleyes:
Saturday afternoon i was at the Snowmobile and ATV show and the engine started to knock and what sounded a bit like a lifter sticking.
anyway it got worse and worse and i was 500 kms from home and needed to get home today so i drove it and it got really loud.
about 100 kms from home the engine went boom and quit and polluted the road with engine oil
I think its a connecting rod through the block but i have not looked to hard at it since they rolled it off the tow truck.
Dunno what I'm gonna do with this thing now.......it maybe a parts car as I'm pretty pissed off.
anyway its done for till i decide what im gonna do with it.
:icon_evil:
NO WAY! :icon_eek:
WTF!!! my lifters are noisy as hell. were yours before that?
No sign of any problems before......no noise just turbo swooshing the loudassed Magnaflows.
I have not looked at it indepth yet so i can't say what exactally happened but my dipstick is all smashed up too  took my buddy Mike quite the skill to get it out :icon_rolleyes:
ahhhh well im not gonna get bent out of shape about it but this may seal this things fate as lately im kinda losing intrest in it.
Oh ya this is in the "Performance" section because i no longer have any "Performance"
lol
hope you get another motor for her.
shit that sucks!!!!! :icon_sad:

Oh man sorry to hear that. Keep us updated as to what happened. Shitty deal Dave.
SHIT!!! That really sucks Dave. Hope you decide to fix it. Sounds like a good winter project to me. Sorry to hear about it.
Sorry to hear that, Dave, that was a gorgeous car. Hope you fix her up!
Damn Dave sure sorry to here that. You have put alot of work in that car. Maybe it's time for a 3400. Sure hope you didn't hurt the pistons. :icon_rolleyes:
Hang in there and fix it, it's like a new car. Except for the motor. You will be lost without it to work on and you wont have anything to talk about if you part it out. Please don't. :icon_sad:

:werd: x3
i have a complete 3400 topend in my garage i'd love to get rid of if you were to consider a hybrid, but i'd rather just go full on 3400 myself. you could easily find a good running low mileage LA1 for cheap.
Thanks guys for the encouragement to fix the damn thing.....i kinda needed that at this point :icon_neutral:
most likely i will start ripping it apart tomorrow just to see the cause and further effect... :icon_rolleyes:
I really dunno yet im very discouraged and at least its more or less the end of the season for it so i have the winter to take my time and do repairs.
a few more tasks to do on it aswell when i have the engine back out too, still gotta fix my cradle thats rusted to F**k also and get SOMETHING ELSE to lower the rear and get that metal leaf OUT!!!
thanks again guys :icon_redface: your good friends
Dave
:( dave i feel for ya.
didnt you have the motor completely redone before you put it in?
aslo - on a side not did it have anything to do with an expermental tune/ boost do you think
Ya Jeff it WAS fully rebuilt before it went in so im intrested to see what failed..
lately i have just been running the mild tune for it especially when im traveling (gas milage is better) if i need the GO GO i can just hit the GO GO button on my steering wheel which activates the MBC.
just tooling around and not driving aggressive at all and that tick tick started and my buddy Mike who was with me is a Mechanic figured it was a lifter also untill it got worse and worse.
but it was a experiance when it blew.......so loud and i was doing about 100 kmph and it changed sounds for maybe a few seconds and im like "OH F**K" and then it let go and shut off.
i was able to hit the clutch and coast to the curb safely.
called the auto club and they were there in 45 mins (it was sunday afterall)
Ouch, sorry to hear that Dave. :icon_redface: Definitely do not part out that nice ass Cutty! ;)
ya that sucks even more... hopefully its not to bad of a engine "failure"
hope not and on another note
JEFF!!!!! WORST SIG EVER!!!!! hurts my eyes
Well shit man! :icon_eek:
Time for a MAJOR winter motor project. I can build one here and send it to you. 500HP easy! Hope your wallet is FAT! ;)
Damn, hope you get it fixed back up.
That Cutlass was awesome!
well its BAD :icon_rolleyes:
pretty big hole right behind the starter and under the coil packs/ICM
the piston is shattered with the wrist pin poking through the hole in the block and the crank end is flopping around in there not attatched to anything.
Lots of metal fell out from around the hole when i removed the starter some block some aluminum. :icon_neutral:
I guess i will start taking it apart and rip the engine out again, trans and all.
Pics when i have my batteries charged....
Very dark day :icon_frown:
Thanks again guys for the posts and also to the guys next door on W-body.com for stopping by :icon_biggrin:

kenny pm with with details on this motor build you can do
dave... lets try and get a 2-4-1 deal from kenny ;)
yea, no shit.
I wanna have 500 HP!!!! lets see it!!!
IBmoredestruction :icon_eek: :willy_nilly: :icon_frown:
Kenny, do you have a transmission and axles that will be able to handle said HP? :icon_razz: Curtis had all sorts of problems with 400 WHP. Its just not what FWD is meant to have, hence why he get a 74' MGB GT to put the stuff in.
Oh and how fat are we talking anyways? I'm curious to see how much more $$ it would be than what my engine cost

dave... lets try and get a 2-4-1 deal from kenny ;)
i just happen to know where Kenny can get an LG5 and an LA1 core if he so chooses to build some motors for you guys :icon_wink:
Well I am not going to hijack Dave's thread and misfortune with a "buy my motor" sales pitch.
Curtis had issues yes...most seemed to be with the way a J-body mounts the tranny and upper mounts. Our setup (w-body mounting points) is far from perfect but will handle alot more than what we are doing for sure. This is something I was planning to play with over the winter and build something real radical that is still streetable.
Problem will be the tranny...either 5-speed or auto holding the power. The axles are fine! I can not stress that enough. Tom (GPchief) and I will most likely have an answer to the auto tranny thing before he goes on another camping trip. More him than me with the auto...but the 5-speed can be made to handle whatever we want to throw at it.
As far as the cost of a 500HP pushrod V6 turbo motor complete... :icon_eek: To be determined is my answer for now. ;)
Hijack away......not much left for me to add to this
change the title to
BUY KENNYS MOTORS OR THIS WILL HAPPEN!!!!!

Hey now, I said IBmoredestruction..... :icon_razz:
A.K.A I'm waiting to see how bad it looks inside, poor little engine :( When these things blow up, they really seem to blow up, they don't just bend a valve or anything, they like nuke pistons, throw rods, etc. etc, Wrist pin sticking out the Oil-Pan.....damn..... :icon_eek: The cousin's 383 just blew up, all it did was burnt a piston/broke a piston skirt, these little guys like make interesting artifacts when they go
The Ticking Timebomb finally reached 0 I guess :icon_neutral:
IIRC this block was bored .030" over right? I am very interested to find out what happened in there, hoping that the same fate doesn't await mine because of the rebuild. I went out and started it today for the first time this month, still starts up great but my $15 starter is not disengaging. I'm interested in seeing more pics as they become available.
No it was stock bore
Shitty, shitty deal Dave :( I hope you fix it, trust me in that you'll regret it if you don't...
Dave,
Sorry about the misfortune, at least nobody was hurt.
I hope you decide to keep it, and rebuild it.
Thomas
Dave I'm sorry bout the Cutty....but what are we looking at in the pic? I have no clue lol :icon_rolleyes:
Pic is where the starter should be, you can see the flywheel in the hole with the teeth.
that silver circle is a wrist pin that goes through the center of the piston on the connnecting rod.........as you can see there in no piston attatched at this time.

And I thought I was the master of distruction.
I consider this little engine pretty strong. I have melted two or three pistons and bent a rod pretty bad, wiped out two cams and it never
came apart.
Dave's was defiantly not old age. Sounds like something was put topgether wrong or something in the machine work wasn't done to size. He defiantly lost a rod, but what caused it?
I had a crank ground which was ground so off center that i didn't use it (oil groves on each side were ground into with the back side near stock) and bought a reground that was perfect. This is not the eaiest crank to gorind. It has to be centered perfectly and what ever is taken off the journal should be removed from the oil relief grove on each side of the crank journal.
No telling what caused the distruction but I am sure Dave will let us know.
Jud
Can't wait Dave.
I had my bottom end done by a local friends shop here in town and he is gonna take a look also and see the cause.
thats the only thing i never did on the engine myself was the bottom.....so im not blaming myself yet
Yea don't blame yourself yet. I think your plenty mechanical to put an engine together. (did you plastigauge a couple of places?)Don't know if you had your crank ground but thats a critical area. If you had the rods resized thats another critical area. If the rods were put on backwards doesn't make alot of difference unless the pistons got turned around and as long as you put the arrow to the front, don't think that would have been a problem.
Jud
No Jud i got the bottom end all assembled and all i did was put the oil pan on and put the heads on......the place where my friend works has done a few engines for me in the past.
350 chevy for my old 1980 Pickup
3.1 which was the original engine in the 1992 CS when it broke a head bolt and flooded the oil with coolant.
and several small engine motor work that requires machine shop equiptment.
we will see when i get that block out and open the pan
I would first go with a broken timing chain or something that caused a valve to hang/stay shut and the boom didn't have anywhere to go, or a spun bearing so no oil and it went boom boom....

i had a timing chain break on my Turbo 3.1 and all that happend was 3 of the valves just slightly nicked the piston tops. replaced the timing chain set and still runs great to this day.

i drove the STE around for a week without an exhaust cam lobe.. imagine forcing the exhaust gases out the intake valve against 9ish psi. i doubt that scenario would've caused his boomage.
Well in the meantime im car shopping, i needed a new winter beater to replace the 1990 CS that died last spring.
dunno what im gonna get though.
Apparently everyone has had different experiences there too, last timing chain failure I saw took at all the valves, and the engine could be turn over by hand by spining the alternator fan........
What price range you looking for Dave? To bad you can't just drive you new snow cruiser as your winter "beater"
Wow thats too bad, i really like that car, strange crap happends i guess. Im in the process of selling my Mazda 323 in a couple weeks but your probably too far away
The '65s large jurnal 327 tossed two rods months ago. It was doing good on the highway at 5Krpm (stalled converter, stock high gears)..as it always does. Then it started making a knocking noise..and then banging and then havic. I suspect mine tossed it because of too many 8Krpm revs. Could you have gone beyond 7Krpm? Free reving also causes this too. Thats just to say that its not always mechanical error.
If you take whats left of the rod off the jurnal..that can tell you if the crank was cut wrong by the bearings and the sides of the rod caps.

good luck with your Turbo Cutty. maybe take a little break from it and then you'll be ready to dive in and make it better than ever. let us know your plans.

Actually, when I sold that car to Jeff it was still the stock TGP driver's side axle. The driver's side axle should be the same between all 4T60, 282, and 284 W-bodies.
Well I need a drivers side for my TGP. Boot is ripped to shit.
Price? Shipped to 80907.
