I am planning on upgrading my factory exhaust over the winter sometime since my cat is clogged, and the rear y-pipe is bent. the question is, what is going to be the most beneficial size for my exhaust without overkill? I dont think I am going to upgrade my downpipe because none of the exhaust people in this area are good enuf (in my book) to do that type of work. I do plan on going with a high flow cat, thinking I might need a resonator, and some muffs. I am hoping to find a mandrel exhaust shop, but I got a feeling that I am not going to have very good luck with that.
Now if planned mods would change your opinion of this, I will tell you what exactly I have planned.
I am not going to be upgrading the turbo. If it goes out, I plan on just rebuilding it, or replacing it with another OEM model if I can find one. I do plan to port match the intake manifolds, but I do not plan on doing a 3x00 intake swap. I am quite pleased with my intercooler and radiator system, so I dont plan any mods in that area either. When my PMIII goes out, I do plan on swapping over to a vacume 3 or 4 channel brake system. Beyond that, I already have a Jeff M. TG160 chip, but as the conversation is going in the other topics, I might upgrade to one of the other chips when prudent. But first I have to get the other driving issues ironed out.
Thanks in advance for your opinions.
From the stock DP----------->2.5 Mandrel Bent Pipe---------> Magnaflow High Flow Cat----------->"Y" Pipe ---------->Dual Magnaflows with your choice of tips.
So you dont think there will be need of a resonator? I have heard that with a high flow cat, it can really make it sound horrid. Any other things I should be thinking along with this stuff?
Nope.....you could add one if you didn't like the sound i guess but i think there a waste of good $$$

Or you could go w/ the same basic setup as above, but delete the mufflers and add a resonator. ;) That would cut down on the cost some if that's a concern. I purchased my car w/ a carsound/magnaflow cat & a 12'' universal resonator already on it. I upgraded the stock piping to 2.5'' mandrel bent tubing though. I'm sure you've heard my exhaust clips before?
Pulling away from the camera slowly.

Launching w/ a little boost, you can see how quiet the exhaust is at WOT in this video.

Luke has a soundclip of his former red TGP w/ magnaflow mufflers on his website btw.

From what I've seen, ALL of our cars sound pretty close to one another due to the turbochargers.
Ok, thats with the Magnaflow muffs, does anyone have sound clips of what a borla, or thrush, delta 40s, or ?? would sound like with the turbo motors? Or do they pretty much sound the same. I have already ordered a High flow magnaflow carsound cat. Still trying to locate a mandrel shop that will install my parts (cat and muffs), I just have to decide on which set of muffs I want to get. I can get away with using no muffs at all. Just dont know how loud that will be, or if it would even sound good.
I had borla on my Allante', but since it was a v-8, I know the sound is not going to be anywhere near the same. The sound i am going for is a deeper rumble, which I know is already a inherant sound of the early 2.8/3.1. I either want to keep that sound, or maybe even deeper. I plan on re-using my stock TGP exhaust tips thou. I just like how they fill the space fluidly.
If you go w/ some mufflers, I would choose some sort of magnaflow, dynomax, or other brand muffler that has a straight-through design. I have no mufflers on my car at all Brian, just the cat and resonator as I stated above. The car is noticeable at idle and when cruising along barely touching the gas, but anything over about 1/2 throttle, the exhaust becomes just about whisper quiet.
This is the style of resonator I have on my car. I think the ones this guy lists have spiraled cores, he usually has a picture of the inside listed. I'm pretty sure my resonator has a straight through style core and isn't spiraled...either one would probably work fine. I believe the spiral core does help speed up the exhaust gas a bit, a lot of aftermarket diesel exhaust systems have spiral core mufflers included.

That guy usually has a lot of 2.5'' and 3'' resonators listed and he'll make whatever length you want. Search "universal resonator" on ebay motors and it'll come up w/ some other similar ones.
