Title: Question for all of you with Top End Swap's
Post by: GPChief on January 12, 2007, 06:53:32 PM
Am tearing down my old engine transferring parts....

I took off my exhaust manifolds and test fit the exhaust to my 3100 "big bore" heads and there is daylight from the exhaust port to the manifold?? (yes they are ported :icon_evil: :icon_evil:)

My question is are all of you top end swappers Using the new manifolds or the old TGP exhaust manifolds?

I'm not quite sure what that means, but yes, I believe almost everyone just ports the TGP manifolds to fit the 3x00 heads. From what I've read, a lot of guys on 60degree condemn this because they think there won't be enough material left to the manifold after they get port matched. But I don't think anyone's really had a problem with it yet.

Well Tom there is always the option of going next door to the water jet and getting flanges cut and making LG5 headers. We will have to make the front upper motor mount as well...but it shouldn't be too painful on the wallet with all of the companies on my street. ;)

Are you talking about this as something being made?  :icon_eek: Or that there are flanges available? I know about the flanges. We could put something together for less than what he is asking.

Ken,

The guy in Canada will sell me flanges for $45...time is running out for trying fo Fabbing stuff.

Jud,

Had my "big bore" 3100 top end gasket matched and the exhaust ports are now almost bigger than the outer diameter of the TGP (LG5) Exhaust manifolds.   Will take pictures Mon.

Oh, I didn't realize you had them gasket matched. TGP manifolds are pretty out of the question then, they barely fit the stock sized ports on 3x00.

Jud I deleted your post bud. Please try to be nice. I know things can get a bit on the annoying side with some of these guys...but let's keep it nice my friend! ;)

Jimmy...if GPChief had a bit more time I am sure he and I would make something that was far from the ordinary and work better than what most of the hacks on the internet are trying to do for the LG5 platform.

Yea if there ported you definatly have a problem. You can do alot of grinding on the upper portion of the ports but if they did anything to the lower part of the D, opps. If you can see the ports with your manifold on somebody really got carried away.

Sounds like it would be cheaper just to get another set of heads. I only paid like 200 or 250 for everything from the cam up including the front cover and PS pump. Thats been a couple years. Heck they may give them away now.

For that kind of money for headers get a 3400 top end. You will be happier.

Jud

Good luck.

I didn't figure it would last long.  Annoying you better believe it. Couldn't help it.

1st PIC my ported heads vs non-ported heads (my 3100 big bore heads have the same casting numbers as the 3400 heads)

2nd comparison of heads to the exhaust manifolds

3rd exhaust gasket on head (showing porting)

4th exhaust gasket on the TGP exhaust manifold
