Title: Higher End Turbo?
Post by: grinders_18 on February 05, 2007, 01:50:20 PM
Ok, normally I pass of some of the eBay sellers descriptions as just lack of knowledge and over-creativity. I.e., there is a 1990 TGP that has just been listed on eBay, with a starting price of over $3000 and claiming it needs over $4000 worth of repairs. Ok, whatever. BUT, this is the second time this year someone has claimed that their TGP has, to quote, "It is the larger turbo engine designed by McLaren exclusively for Pontiac that year.  They made 2700 of a high end smaller engine, but only 1000 of the high end larger engine." End quote...so please help me out. Where are they getting this from? I have never heard from anyone, excepting people who like to claim they know Jesus on eBay, that there were more than one turbocharged engine in the 2 years. Anyone have any insight? Maybe someone could explain to this person what's going on? lol. Thanks!

Just the seller blowing smoke. Althou it is true that the 3.1 debutted in the TGP (88 turbo prototype, 2 made in total) and the 6000 STE AWD (88 models, of which only 127 were made), It is still basicly the same motor that the later cars had with the 3.1. What the seller should be saying is that the motor was gone over by McLaren, and only the tops parts were used in the making of the TGP car (heads, crank, etc).

I hate the sellers that have no clue what they are talking about...

Now wait a minute  :icon_confused:, 2 years ago before I registered on this site their was a guy selling a turbo that was dedicated for the TGP  upgraded version and was never used sitting on this guy's shelf. He sold this on ebay for around $500. I thought everybody on this site remembered that, hell I sure do. Now I wish I would have bought it or at least saved it on the computer.

The turbo doesnt make the motor bigger. Althou the internals of the motor are more robust (see earlier post), the motor is still the same. You can take the turbo system off it, change the rear mani and cross over over to a regular 3.1, and change the chip to a non turbo model, and it will run just like any old w-body with a 3.1 motor.

True also that the turbo is a TGP only turbo (last I remember anyways).

The 2700/1000 productions numbers are in reference to the STE sedan. Roughly 2700 with the 3.1...1000 with the turbo 3.1
