Title: TGP secondary cooling fan motor
Post by: twinturbosedan on October 08, 2002, 04:33:13 PM
does anyone here know if the secondary fan motor is still available from GM (or anywhere else)?  i called the dealership here today, and they said it was $102.63 for just the motor itself.  i'm not 100% sure they looked up the right part #, so i figured i'd check here.  i just got my TGP radiator and both fans yesterday, but unfortunately the smaller fan motor is all rusty and has alot of melted plastic and stuff in it and it's pretty much locked up.  also, is the small fan a pusher? (mounted in front of radiator/IC?)  i'm trying to figure out how to mount it.  the primary fan, radiator, and IC is no problem (i got the radiator 'hat' too), but i can't seem to locate the 3 mounting points for the smaller fan.  any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

That price for the smaller fan sounds about right.. I just replaced the primary about a month ago. and it waqs like 210 new.. so the 100 sounds about right..  I am not sure on the monting though I will have to look into that.. KCP

You guys should be running Rapidcool fans. They are way better than factory

They sell them at my local part stores here in Oregon. Mine had to have custom brackets welded on to the radiator when I had it recored. Dont ever use those radiator mounts that poke through the fins. The vibration from the fan motor will tear up your rad. These high output fans really push some air, mine is like 1300 cfm compared to the OEMs 700 cfm. I think I paid like $130 at Knecht's Auto Parts in Eugene. Part # I dont know, but I am pretty sure there are different outputs depending on how much you spend.

I'm planning on using a fan setup that Ramcharges sells. But, my TGP won't be so much TGP by then.

Where did you get the spec on the OEM fans? I don't doubt that there are fans that push more air, but the factory primary fan moves ALOT of air.

Dude, the fan is so powerful it shakes the whole car after I turn it off, you know when the fan runs after the car is off. My oem fan wasnt working when I got the car so I did not get to compare, but thats when I was talking to the parts guy about CFMs, and thats what he said. You will see when you buy it, it has more fins and a bigger motor with thick wire. I guess technically I am not a certified technician, not that it means shit around here  ,but the rapidcool fan I got is superior.

I don't doubt its better. I was curious if that was the actual rating which seemed low to me. To be honest, I would doubt any parts persons input about a TGP part unless they have one. 99% of the time, independent parts counts won't correctly show TGP parts. Air filters, radiators, fans all reference back to an NA GP, not a Turbo. I've looked at alot of books to find out. The AC Delco ones seem to be ok, but I always double check them too. :)

SURPRISINGLY, every time i call a parts place around here (Checker or Advance) they want to know if i have the turbo 3.1 or not!  i still don't trust them enough to buy any part (TGP or not) unless i can look at the part myself in person at the counter.  i haven't checked on the fans yet (all i need is the smaller IC fan motor), but hopefully i can get it from somewhere else (not the dealership for $103)

Oh, they will SHOW there is a 3.1 liter, but alot of times the listing will be for the SAME part as a 3.1 NA, even though it says turbo. Pain in the ass usually.
