Title: Noise from Tranny Area
Post by: grinders_18 on February 11, 2007, 04:57:16 PM
Ok, so it's been awhile since there's been a big problem for me. But, for the last few days, I've been hearing this whining/winding sound coming from around the tranny...I can pinpoint it to around that area. Now the last fews days my car's been shifting strange, and I thought it was because it's been retardedly cold out, but now I'm kinda putting them together to be someting worse...Whenever I am trying to accelerate in first going to second, it takes forever to shift...then it goes inot second and the rest...but it's a slow transition...now I have full power from the engine, but it redlines and doesnt shift unless I let it take it's time...I'm close to taking it to a tranny shop, but I need opinions as what could be going on. I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks!

fluid and filter change may do it some good, check the fluid too, see if its discolored, or worse, brown/black, or has metal chunks in it. Sounds like your not having tons of luck with your TGP.... take it on the highway for like 1/2 hour and see if it still does it, highway driving heats up the transmission, and cold fluid might be making your worn out transmission wine.

My tranny used to do all the same things, and still does whine. New filter/fluid will help some. The shifting issues I pinpointed to a vacume leak, and fixed that promptly. I will be doing a full tranny service come spring time with Mobil 1 Synthetic tranny fluid, and a new filter. If that doesnt work, I am going to buy a 5 speed setup and have it on standby.

I just had a full T-Tech flush and filter change back in October I believe it was...it makes the noise even after driving a hour...my dad is trying to convince me it's not coming from the tranny area, but it sure sounds like it...of course it sounds like it's coming from everywhere.

Usually when you hear a whining from the trans it is the pump. You can limp it around for a while but eventually it will have to be replaced  :icon_sad: I have a good trans(no funny noises and shifted fine)98xxx miles on it.$200 plus shipping..Thanks...Adam

Hey I just might take you up on that trans...but question: what's the pump? I know literally nothing of transmissions...even less of how they work. Can you shed some light?

I'm not much of a transmission guy either.I will only do them for family and close friends.Everybody else has to buy a new one with a WARRANTY.  O.K the transmission has a pump behind the torque converter that pumps fluid throughout the transmission. The gears in the pump have certain clearances. When the gears get old, worn or broken they shed metal. As the metal wears off the pump gears, the clearances become greater and thus making more noise.Oh yea all that metal gets pumped through your transmission too.Not to good for the internal(hard) parts. :icon_cry:  Hope this helps...Adam

Are you saying you can rebuild a 4t60 trans? How hard is it, and can you recommend what kind of parts are needed to have it rebuild? I know the kit, but is there more than one kit, one of which is better? What else should be done when rebuilding the trans? Thanks alot! And by the way, anyone can answer...I may make this another topic, but maybe not lol.

I've rebuilt lots of transmissions(mostly manuals)The 4t60 isn't that bad. With all the parts, transmission dissembled and clean it takes me around 4hrs to reassemble it.Look at my avatar. That is the table where I build transmissions.Back in 05 when i did the trans in my TGP I used Raybests bands and clutches.I am real happy with them and have used them in lots of 700r4s for thirdgen camaros. They work great! :icon_mrgreen: To bad the hard parts of the 4t60 will not take much abuse  :icon_cry: or I would still have one under my TGPs hood.Actually I have nothing under the hood of my TGP but when It goes back togeather it will have a manual transmission.  :icon_biggrin: If you decide to get a new trans make SURE it has a good warranty..later
