Title: Uh Oh...
Post by: zero32700 on February 13, 2007, 03:53:52 PM
Ok, so Ive been trying to work out all the kinks with the car... various problems of all sorts.

Well ive been having an electrical problem... at least thats what i think it is... Ill explain.

First problem with the car: dead altenator. Car sat for a while and I replaced the alternator with a  140 or 160 amp alternator... dont remember, i also put a bigger battery in the same time.

Now... this happened a while after... I have a low idle... starts fine but after it warms up it idles about 900 rpm's, and when i turn my turn signals on at a stop light the lights dim a bit after a being stopped and the blinker gets slower, i believe this all started at the same time.

Well today I was poking around for another problem and found a melted wire coming from the firewall that somehow got on the turbo. I dont have pics yet, I will later... but i wonder if this could be the problem... I dont know where the wire goes yet... its so cold outside. Its a little white wire with a red stripe coming from the drivers side firewall.

Any input will be helpful...

Thanks

Dylan

Do a search for "the big 3" I think it is. Its an upgrade to the electrical system that will pretty much eliminate the dimming of lights when things are turned on. its a pretty easy upgrade, and the parts are readily available. As far as the wire, I dont know, probly need to cut and splice, solder, and then some heat shrink tubing. Then you insulate the wire with that wiring conduet stuff.

i was gonna do the battery a few weeks ago but didnt get around to it. so ill try that.

what gauge should i use?

Battery negative to chassis : 4 gauge
Chassis to engine : 4 gauge
Alternator to battery positive : 8 gauge?

or should i go bigger?

Ok. So tonight... I had just pulled out of my parking space and was driving down my street and my HUD turned off... I was like wtf cause i always use that rather than the speedo. Then I stopped at the stop light and my battery light turned on, and then the check engine light. So I already have to get on the road... only going like 3 miles down the road, so I turn the radio and heat off and I hear my alternator whining faintly... Get there and the car was starting to overheat, I did a coolant flush and thermo when I did the alt and battery. I volt checked the car... not the best points and not on the battery, just wanted to see what was going on. With the car off I got 12.4V, and with the car on i got 11.98V.

I never did the serpentine belt... I will do that because it could prob be a little tighter and the new ground cables.
OH and to top this all off the primary fan is frozen. Guess that explains the overheating.

I just cant get a break with this car. I just bought like 400$ worth of parts to do a tune up. (fuel injectors, chip, plugs, wires, filters, oil, and coil packs) Still need a tv cable, new cat, My cross over is broken, FAN, and a radiator soon. wow.

I pray your radiator isn't going out...they don't make a replacement...even when the stores say they do...even a dealership can't get it...I KNOW I"VE BEEN THERE for over a MONTH and they brought in different radiators all claiming to be the one..but no. You need to find a junker TGP or one someone will sell you if yours is shot...I feel for you man, I honestly do. I went through all this for a year...only thing is $400 for all that is CHEAP! I spent more than that on just the injectors and coils...of course I always get the best of the best. Trust me, if $400 is all you'll ever need to spend on your TGP, you are damn lucky.

Ya, shopped around and did some ebaying... Well I just bought 2 service manuals so they will be well used soon. And that second list is going to be wayyy more expensive than the first, unless someone is gonna sell their cross over and rad.

Have to find time to put all this crap in, so busy with work and school.

I wish I could have found this forum before I bought the car, I would have taken a road trip and bought TGPilot's car. grr.

I have a radiator and a shop locally that can recore it. They did the one in my TGP and no problems yet. But they are expensive...
