Title: Tire Question
Post by: TGP Nick on February 22, 2007, 05:24:48 PM
What tire pressure should I be running? Sounds like a stupid question, but I wanna know.   I have Yokohama Avid V4S 245.50.ZR16's and they don't have an inflate to: label/writing on them.  The only thing they say is: "max load:44 PSI" and they also say "do not inflate past 40 PSI to seat bead".  When I had the car at the dealer last fall, they wrote on their checkpoint list that they inflated all tires to 44 PSI.  On my trunklid, I believe it says to run 32? PSI...  anyone have any idea what PSI I should be running?

They inflated the tire to 44 PSI??  That is WAYY to much... had to be riding like a rock.  30-32 is good.  And no tire is going to have an "Inflate to.." on them because the same size tire is on many different cars, and the inflation specs are different.  Where I work, we go by the placard (SP?), unless it is an older Explorer, in which the placard says "26PSI".  And we ALL know what happened there... :icon_rolleyes:

Well the tire pressure stated on the car is what the "optimum" ride and road noise pressures where for the original tires on the car. On any of my vehicles I always feel comfortable to run 38psi. This way it is not too hard on the suspension, normally not noisey, and allows for a non-dragging pressure (ease of rotation).

If a tires max cold pressure is 44psi and you fill it cold with normal air to 44psi that means you will increase in pressure when the tire warms. If you fill with nitrogen it will not change in pressure with temp...but then the tire will most likely wear the center of the tread faster than the outer making for issues when you put some miles on the car.

I like between 35-38 psi in my tires, but that is my personal preferance.

YES they put 44 PSI in all 4 tires!  My rear struts are completely seized up, so I didn't notice any difference in ride quality whatsoever!

Good to know... ever since I got the car last summer, I have run 35 PSI in the tires, granted I have put MAYBE 1,500 miles on the car since then.
