Title: well i'm out of the Turbo 3.1 stuff...
Post by: twinturbosedan on March 23, 2007, 09:34:18 PM
i sold my Turbo 5-speed Cutlass today for $2000 to a local friend.  about an hour later i'm the proud new owner of a '92 Olds Trofeo :icon_biggrin:  yeah, it's really slow but i really like the car.  it's kinda cool owning a coupe again and most importantly something DIFFERENT!  i owned the Cutlass for 7 years and i was just getting tired of the 1st GEN W-bodies and wanted something new to mess around with/learn on i guess.  to be honest i'd love to throw an LG5 in the car but due to school coming up that kind of project is just a little out of my league so i guess if i do mod it later on it'll have to be the 3800.  i still love the 60*V6s though.  i'll really miss the 5-speed too of course but i've come to the conclusion that if i ever get another 5-speed car it's going to have to be a Turbo Dodge.....as in a Spirit R/T haha.  maybe someday.

anyway it's fully loaded with VIC touchscreen (really cool!), power moonroof, black leather interior and power everything.  the trunk is freaking HUGE :icon_eek: it needs a little body work but i got it CHEAP.  after selling the Cutty and buying this i still have $1300 left over to pay off my old student loan and a few other bills so i can more easily afford school this fall.  the car has 149,000 miles - that's 100,000 less miles than my Turbo Cutlass had, it's one year newer.  AC blows cold and it even came with a new Pioneer CD/MP3 player.  it's not in the best condition right now (body damage is really only cosmetic - it needs a hood and fender) but i'm pretty resourceful when it comes to junkyard hunting so eventually it will look pretty good again.  it's a nice sleek looking car really and i'm pretty happy with it.  the engine runs really good and transmission shifts perfectly, so for right now it's really just my work car/project car.  it will let me keep the miles and abuse off my "nicer" car so that's another plus.  to my surprise i'd have to honestly say this Trofeo handles and brakes 10x better than either my Regal GS or Cutlass!  i really couldn't believe how well it handles the road.  now if only it had the power to back it up haha.

welll here it is....

the good side:

the "not so good side"

i really like the stock wheels:

the ugly :( it's going to need a new header panel, hood, fender, door, the small corner piece, foglight and the lower grill strip.  at least the front bumper and gfx aren't damaged at all:

looks like it's gotta black eye haha:

i'd post some interior pics but i have the center console pulled out right now and i'm in the middle of cleaning the hell out of it.

it's not the best looking thing right now of course but it will be soon.  for a few hundred bucks and considering it runs great and has a certain "coolness factor" i'm pretty happy with it.

oh yeah, i still want a Turbo STE bad; i just can't seem to find one in my budget that's anywhere close to here.  i did have one for a little while last year but due to rust and like 90% of the paint falling off i decided to just part it out.  this Trofeo is really just a work car that i want to make look a little nicer.  i thought about maybe doing an L67 swap but i seriously doubt i'll do anything to make this one "fast".  to be honest if i could sell my Regal GS i'd be on the hunt for a nice Turbo STE to replace it.  what can i say, i'd take a TGP/TSTE over an L67 GS/GTP any day of the week :icon_mrgreen:

i really do miss owning a Turbo Dodge though, right now i'm working on my old TII '89 Lebaron GTS (sold that one to a friend awhile back).  the radiator got a hole in it but thankfully my brother still has the rad/ic from Shelby Lancer #371 (RIP) sitting in his garage so it's an easy fix :)  that GTS was a really fun car but what i really want next time around is a Spirit R/T.  but, if i got one it would have to be white.  those TIIIs are just awesome not to mention the bulletproof A568 trans :icon_exclaim: and unlike the 282s you can switch around the FDR and get a good LSD like Quife or OBX.  that was always my big complaint with the 282 - the gearing was just too damn steep and no good LSD available.  my brother is currently installing a TIII/A568 into his Shelby Lancer #127 so that should be really interesting.  maybe if he ever "thins the heard" (he owns 3 TDs right now) i can score that Shelby from him; i really like the TD H-bodies.

what i really need to do is rent out a shop with my brother so i we can have room for our cars haha.  wouldn't that be nice.  i'm down to two right now; but if i found something i really liked i'd probably get a third.  what can i say i'm a project car addict :icon_redface:  ah well, better than spending all of my money on meth or beer   and it keeps me busy to say the least.  too bad cars are such an expensive hobby.

Looks simalar to my 88 Trofeo. You have the bigger body thou (The car does, not you). I have the same rims on mine. I love the trofeos, but the older 3.8 have the problem with the cam sensor magnet coming off. Really sucks..

is that a problem with the Series I L27 as well?  i know the earlier Toronado/Trofeos got the older 3800 LN3 engine up until '91; then in '92 they got the newer L27 which is what mine has.

btw, i found a website called www.trofeoparts.com and emailed the guy.  he has a rust/dent free door and fender from a '92 Trofeo that came from Tuscon in exactly the same color as my car and told me he'd sell both for $300.  i'm really tempted to snatch them up but shipping would be killer :icon_frown:  however i wouldn't have to spend money getting them paint matched.  sure would make the car look alot nicer....  he also sent me a few pics and the guy has like 12-15 Trofeos parked in his yard!

Oh that guy. He is a toro freak LOL. I bid against him on ebay for my toro. But I bought it locally instead of thru ebay..

I forgot about the year thing ending in 91. Not sure if the 92 has the same problem or not. I am posting on another board about it. but they arent any help really...

i got an email from him and he wants $1100 for the door, fender and a header panel delivered (ugh, twice as much as i paid for the car!).  he said he would even deliver them personally (that's a helluva drive from New York...jeeez).  i'm sure that's still alot cheaper than what a body shop would want to fix that stuff but the shippiing/transport $$ thing kinda kills that deal so hopefully i can find what i need locally and get it done cheaper myself.  i probably won't get lucky enough to find anything in the same color but oh well.

btw, i took some screenshots of the VIC last night and played around with it a little:

jeez, that guy is nuts.  nice guy and seems very knowledgeable through the emails i've gotten, but he wants a freaking mint for everything.  like $2000 just for the stuff i need to fix the front end and door!  and that doesn't even include shipping.  well, whatever i guess, i might as well just go buy a another Trofeo for that kind of money.  i guess the parts are worth more to him just sitting in his yard.  he seems to think the cars are REALLY rare but i mean c'mon, altogether there were around 20,000 Trofeos produced from '90-'92 and that doesn't even count the regular '90-'92 Toronados which have parts that would work just as well.  ah well, i'll just be patient and see what i can find through junkyarding, forums, ebay etc.  i don't mind waiting.

eh, rant over haha.

You'll find it that way it might just take longer. I bought my 68 Charger R/T from my brother for 400 in 85 and in 2000 I was looking for a nice fender. Arizona wanted 800 for a rust free fender plus shipping. I searched ebay for months and fianlly got my hands on a rust free one with 1 very small crease shipped for 168.

well i made a deal with the guy and he took it :)  i'm buying the complete header panel/headlight assembly from him for $450 (total/shipped).  the one on my car got cracked up and it's impossible to install a highbeam headlight or a driver's side headlight door since the mounting tabs are busted off.  it's the whole nose, everything included: main header panel that everything attatches to, the headlight doors and motors, all linkage, the "grill" panel, the corner pieces, headlights etc....everything except the thin lower grill strip.  he's also including a driver's side fender that's already the same color as my car in the deal.  he previously wanted $500 (i pay shipping) for the header/headlight assembly and $125 (i pay shipping) for the fender so i got the price down quite a bit.  i'm sure shipping that stuff is going to be pretty expensive for him.  i'll have to get the headlight assembly repainted though (it's bright red).  he also has a nice rust/dent free driver's door that's also already the same color as my car so i'll be picking that up next, as well as a complete dashpad/glovebox assembly (mine is cracked in a few spots).

now ii just need the hood (already found a nice one right here in town for $100 but it's silver) and then get the door from the guy i got these other parts from.  after the paint work it will be nice and straight again; no body damage at all :)  at least this is costing quite a bit less than what a body shop would charge!

Have you ever checked out shipping things on greyhound buses? When I bought my fender this guy was using greyhound to ship this stuff. It is dirt cheap compared to truck or other ways to ship big items. You do have to pick it up at a terminal. My fender was shipped from somewhere out west. (a north western state) to Philadelphia for like 38 bucks. It took a week or so but came in fine. I believe it must be boxed to ship. He cut up a big screen TV box to ship my fender. It wasn't pretty but protected it just fine. Now this was in 2000 so I don't know what there pricing is today.
