Title: TC Oil Prime
Post by: TGed on April 07, 2007, 10:54:02 PM
How would one go about oil priming a turbocharger with out the eletric primer or spinning the oil drive shaft with a drill?  Could the exhaust and intake from the TC be unbolted/unclamped for about 30 seconds (leaving the oil feed and return line attached to TC) while cranking the engine (Not running) ?

Thanks!

Not sure if you are talking about priming it for a reinstall, or new install altogether, but I will be doing the same real soon. So my question to all, without trying to hijack your thread, what do you do to your turbo when you are installing a new one? What nees to be done to prime it? Nothing? Just install it? Or pour some oil in? HelP!

Pull the fuel pump fuse and crank it until you have oil pressure for a few seconds. Should do this also when you change the filter.

When I change out a turbo on the trucks from work I take a 4 oz bottle I have with a pointed tip and push 4 oz of oil in the feed hole while spinning it by hand before putting on the line. If the filter is full already from running before replacement I just fire it up then. Anytime I put on an empty oil filter I disable the engine from running and crank it to fill the filter. The TGP is great with the fuel pump fuse to pull.  It also doesn't hurt to put some oil in the filter before spinning it on. Since the filter sits on an angle on these engines you can't fill it all the way up without spilling some so I just half way fill it. Most of the trucks at work the filters sit up straight so they can be filled all the way to the top. Most hold 1 gallon of oil.

It would be a new turbo...

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Yeah, all I do is prefill my new oil filter. The car builds oil pressure almost instantly upon startup.

Hosestly I would not worry about it personally. Unless the builder of the turbo absolutely requires it to be done. You will have oil at the feed line as you crank the motor. Considering there is no oil in any of our turbos at start up I do not see why you would need to "prime" it first use. All of the oil drains out the bottom of the turbo anyway.
