Title: thick gauge aluminum heat shield
Post by: Mr. Mod Man on October 15, 2002, 05:23:39 AM
I just found a superior heatshield to the factory turbo blanket. Out of blind luck I was walking through a junkyard and spotted a Olds Quad 442 and happened to notice something very interesting under the hood. The intake was removed from this high performance early 90s quad 4 engine exposing the heatshielded header and is bolted down to the top of the head and curves perfect over the header. I said shit this ought to fit just about perfect around the downpipe and most of the turbo on my tgp and unbolted the thing. The yard gave me the thing for free even.

After I got home I immediately went to go install it because my blanket was long gone and the heatshield I custom designed out of that aluminum backed fiberglass cloth was ruined by my local Aamco mechanics. So I had no choice but to do something about the heat, it was boiling the gas in my fuel lines by the downpipe.

This header heatshield more than did the trick. It is designed to insulate a header on a high performance quad four motor that revs hella high over the 3.1 liter. the tach said like 8 grand before it redlines. The two-layer aluminum shield is thick gauge and insulated in between and crimped around the edges. About the same gauge as a beer can. I dont know exactly what is used for insulation, fiberglass or asbestos or something, but it works!

The thing pretty much was the perfect size, just had to bend around the edges a little and stomp down one side so it would fit tighter around the downpipe. Watch out so you dont shred the plastic around the speedo cable housing, thats the only thing you have to watch out for besides the cruise cont. box which you might have todo a little more smashing to accomodate. Oh and you have to remove the intake pipe first.

Now I can idle again! I can actually make it through the Wendys drive-thru without vaporlocking everytime!

After long trips pop the hood and the fuel line is like ice cold. Shields half of the battery and the intake pipe too and at the same time allows the heat to escape from the turbo unlike the blanket which holds in heat. You can probably order a oem part but I dont know the number, so good luck hunting the yards.

Olds Cutlass Calais Quad 442 kick ass.  IN 1991 they made a W41 package that they only made 204 of with a 190hp quad four and a 5 speed manual with a limited slip.  When motortrend tested the car it outran the Camaro Z28 of the same year.  Not that it's hard to outrun a slowmaro :).

Very nice! Drove a Olds SCX with the Q4HO in it very nice!  Get a picture of that thing! Nice find, not that the Q4HO's are super common.
