Title: My WRX...
Post by: god910 on April 29, 2007, 06:20:24 PM
...is now a 6 speed...  That is all.   :icon_biggrin:

Noooooo it's not.   :icon_twisted: Over the last few weeks I've swapped my car from it's anemic yucky 5 speed to the 6 speed from a JDM Ver. 8 (2004) STi.

I also switched the rear subframe out for a JDM Ver. 8 STi subframe including the R180 rear diff, (Which has 3.90 gears to match the tranny) full STi Brembo's (Big damn brakes as I prefer to call them.) Whiteline front and rear sway bars (2 way adjustable front, and 3 way adjustable rear) Kartboy front and rear endlinks, Turn In Concepts Holy shift kit (an awesome shifter assy bushing kit) rear x-member bushings, rear subframe lock bolts, tranny x-member bushings, fender cowl braces, steering rack bushings, and flushed the whole brake system out with Motul RBF600 brake fluid.  I'm adding a set of CarboTech PantherPlus brake pads (auto-x and track pads)

I've also installed a set of Tein SS-P coilovers with full pillowball mounts and front camber plates.  They are also hooked up to a Tein EDFC box, which is Electronic Dampening Force Controller.  Basically I can adjust my coilovers 32 different positions (bounce and rebound simultaniously) save 3 different setting groups, and control the front and rear coilovers separately.

I'm having a block built for the car, it's a 2.5L Legacy GT block with a fully forged bottom end (I'm thinking JE pistons and Crower rods) the block is at Darton right now getting the sleeves installed.

I'm then adding a Perrin Rotated mount turbo setup, consisting of a Garrett GT3576R with a .82 a/r hot side, Tial 42mm external wastegate, Perring rotated specific uppipe, downpipe, and inlet bits.  An SSA front mount kit will round this all off.  Should be good for over 500 AWHP.  This is and will be my daily driver, year round.

Now that this phase of the car is done, I'll hopefully be able to get working on a "race clip" for the TGP.  I'm going to make a somewhat hot swappable front subframe setup.  And use the 4T65EHD on it.  I'm very eager to get these other 2 TGP's out of my yard so I'll be pulling the front subframe on the red TGP soon, and setting it up in the garage for the tranny setup.

I just figured I'd post a little update about my WRX and me.   ;)

  Well, we've had some pretty crazy weather up here, and I've just now been able to get the pressure washer hooked back up.  Tomorrow morning I'm going over it with a fine tooth comb... a clay bar actually, and washing with Meguiar's Deep Crystal soap, then hitting it with the 3 stage Deep Crystal.  I've not used it before, so we'll see how it does.

Plus, this car has been the parts runner for the entire project.  I went deep into the bowels of Kentucky to pick up the 04 STi engine.  I took it to just north of Columbus, Ohio to pick up my Legacy GT engine, then down to the East side of Columbus to pick up the JDM 6 speed tranny.  Just before those pics were taken (like 3 hours before  ;) ) the car got back from an engine run.  We went up to a little town just outside of Detroit to pickup a Grand National engine.

I put well over 1500 miles on the car in 1 week picking up parts for it.  I figure it should have to do the work to really enjoy the benefits.

And in case you were wondering, everything was put IN the car.  No trailors or anything odd like that...

That's how I got the engine out.  And that is a COMPLETE 04 STi engine.  Intake manifold to pan, valve cover to valve cover!!!!

 ....I can't laugh much though because I have an engine in the backseat of my project Volvo @ the moment.

I've used the Meg's three step cleaner/polish/wax several times and it does a great job. I've been lazy lately and have been using a few one step products...

Thanks for the comments fellas.   :icon_mrgreen:

Let me tell you why I bought a Subaru, I'm very passionate about this...

Imagine if you will 2 car companies, well call them Company GM, and Company SU, to use completely meaningless letters.

Company GM has been recycling an engine and transmission for the last 20 years, the model specific changes happen MAYBE every 3-5 years, the prices on their products are just rediculous for the amount of Safety, quality, efficiency, practicality, engineering, etc.

Then there's company SU, which has the most advanced AWD system in the world, has perfected their engines and transmissions in a very limited amount of time, does complete model overhauls every 2 years with upgrades and foresight changes on a yearly basis, is an industry leader in safety, quality, efficiency and engineering.

Go to a Company GM dealership and look at a few cars.  Here are the cars I was hoping to buy...  New Colorado p/u.  With a 5 cylinder engine, 2wd, almost NO options, White (which is the cheapest color to buy if you didn't know that) standard cab, was going to cost me in the 24-26K range with no incentives or discounts.

Used Malibu or Impala (2002-2003 model year at the time of purchase (2005))  Same DAMN engine and transmission that they've been using since fricking 1988 (yes, they were updated, and improved, but COME ON, same shit)  Driver and pass. airbag, Cd  peg-leg FWD, 25-28ish MPG, 30-40K on the clock, ~anywhere from $18-$22K

Now, goto Company SU's dealership, hmmm....  2003, 40K on the clock, 2.0L Turbo boxer engine, 5 speed, AWD, Driver and pass air bags along with side airbags, 6 disc in dash CD changer, upgraded speaker system with subwoofer, factory short throw shifter, 25+ MPG driving like you stole it.  $16,700 and to be fair I overpaid because of the paint color, there were only 1500 WRX's painted this color, and it was only available first quarter.  That was split amongst sedans and wagons.

I have yet to replace something because it needed to be replaced.  I put a new wheel bearing in when it didn't need one.  Whoops.

I've put over 42,000 miles on this car since I bought it, and haven't so much as had to replace the belts.   ;)

My main complaint is, why in the hell are we paying Company GM such outrageous prices when all they are doing is recycling old shit.  Every 5 years or so they set out to polish the turds.  They can't competitively build a car that reaches market standards.  I'm amazed they are still even in business.

You could go out tomorrow and pick up a brand new 07 WRX TR (tuner ready) which is basically a totally stripped WRX, and drive it to the strip and run a 13.65 right off the showroom floor.  This car will set you back in the neighbor hood of $22,000.  Show me a GM car that is even closely classed with this car.  I'm not even talking about performance either.  Build quality, safety, etc.

I'll probably never buy another DD that's not a Subaru... I mean Company SU.

Oh, and Dave, don't even think about it.  Aparantly Subaru hates you Igloo dwellers, because (I'm sure you already know) they are STUPID expensive up there.  Not only in the exchange, a new STi in CD's is like 42,000 USD or something.   :icon_eek:

wants me to find him and import him one now.....i laughed

I don't know how much it'd help or what years he's looking for, but in the USMY (U.S. Model Year) 02-03 (the bugeyes, like mine) if you could get an STi imported from Iceland they are the 2.0L EDM (European Domestic Market) STi's.  There is a guy on ClubWRX.net from Iceland with one of these and with just an exhaust and a MBC he was running 12.6's.   :icon_eek:

In the U.S. they started the STi in 04, and are all 2.5L.

The current stock turbo USDM STi record was broken a few weeks ago... 11.7 @ 113 with a fast trap of 115.   ;)

Car looks good!  And for the record, if I could sell my TGP I'd be all over an import 4 cylinder.  I paid $3.13 for gas today and its not even June yet.   :icon_eek:

Don't take too much offense, please. You've invested plenty of time and money into your vehicle, and if you're proud of it, then I congradulate you on doing what makes you happy.

FTW though, the reason that GM is having such a hard time competing price wise is because of health care and retirement pensions for their employees.  I realize this says little about the quality issues compared to the often seemingly indestructible import competitions, but for "young corporations" like Subaru these things are not so much of an issue.

I'd like to get my hands on an Impreza 2.5 RS sometime this year.  AWD FTW.

Oh, I'm not at all hurt by the opinions of others.  That's what makes this county so great, you just might want to actually look at where all the GM cars are being made now adays.  For instance, every single Subaru sold in North America (save for the Impreza, which is supposed to be here by the end of 08) is made in an assy. plant in Lafayette, IN.  Have you ever heard of Oshawa, ON, CA?  That is an absolutely HUGE assy plant for GM.  They make about 8 different lines of GM cars, trucks, and SUV's.  Maybe you've heard of the fact that Honda's primary assy. plant for the U.S. is in Ohio?  Or the new Honda assy. plant going up here in Indiana?  GM is pulling all their jobs out of the U.S. and Toyota, Honda, and Subaru are bringing them here.  And don't get me started on the GM plants in Mexico... nothing like a new $650 million dollar facility to go up where all the employees will quite in 6 months, and really have no reason to strive to do a good job.  Just good enough to keep your job for 6 months.   ;)
