Title: Just took off plenum and have a few questions
Post by: 350TPI on May 07, 2007, 06:08:28 PM
I am upgrading the turbo and injectors and was wondering what all should i change while this is off.I am already going to change the plenum and throttle body gaskets along with the valve cover gaskets. How hard is the rear VCG to replace?Should i replace the FPR while i am in there? Also,i took out the 4 bolts that hold down the fuel rails and disconnected the fuel lines that run to the rail and it still wont budge. What am i missing? Also i am going to replace the injector o rings.I have oil all over the back of the engine from a long time leak that the prev owner didnt address. Is there any other gasket besides the VCGs that would cause this?Sorry for all of these questions but i need to know this before i put it all back together.Thanks,chris.

Sure is, the oil pump drive o ring is the biggest culprit for oil leaks on these motors.

Your fuel rails are just stuck in there from age and crap around the bottom of the injectors. Blow out the crap before prying the rails off.

Get yourself a vacume line set too. Those things are always breaking.. PCV Valve, Clean out the EGR passages, rebuild the crossover, oil return lines. If your AC doesnt work, this would be a good time to replace the orifice, and drier tank.

Anything else I am missing here guys?

What is the part number for the black piece that goes on the back of the TB that has the 5 vacuum lines?I really need one of those.

Don't think the dealer has them anymore, although they do have the vacuum lines in kit form.

I think Jeff M bought a few of rubbe blocks awhile back, you might try to contact him.

BTW it's four vacuum lines, just to clarify. And I would suggest going to your local junkyard...may yield good results!

Oooh ooh I have a couple of those vaccum blocks sitting in my basement, and they are still available from the dealer.  The part number is somewhere on this site, but let me run and get the box I will post it.  Hold on, BRB.

10114903

EGR harness, but its the vacuum block that goes into the top of the throttle body.  I think they are around $30 list.  I'd be willing to let one of mine go as I won't be needing 2.  I can take pics if you want/are interested.

Sorry nick but i will definitely be buying it.Another quick question about the stupid fuel rail.I went home yesterday and was prying it up with a screwdriver and heard a strange noise.Next thing i know fuel is running out of the rail onto the lower intake.Looks like when i was prying and injector either broke off or dislodged from the fuel rail.Is there a better way to do this? After that happened i just soaked up the gas and was done for the night.

Damn, your injectors must really be stuck in there.  Usually the rail and the injectors come off as one unit.  If fuel started running down into the intake then one of the injectors must have come out of the fuel rail.  I would try pull the clips that hold the injectors on off, trying to get the fuel rail off, and then pull the injectors individually.  You'll definetly want to put new O-rings on your injectors once you get them off.

You obviously removed the 4 bolts that hold the rail to the LIM right?  If you did than yes they must really be stuck but the will come out.  Try prying the rail from all 4 corners to wiggle it loose a bit, dont give steady pressure but a little bounce with the bar you are using to pry.  It sounds like you may certainly have damaged one of the injectors.  Good luck getting them out!

Have you already purchased replacements?
