Title: HUD Oddity
Post by: Prospeeder on May 22, 2007, 10:53:56 PM
Ok my hud will occasionally just show bits and pieces of what its suppose to, like it misses some lines in the numbers and what not, but u can tell its working and changing, if u bang on the dash, it works like normal, think its internal or the conector may be loose, i need to get underthere and look, but i was wondering if anyone else had these sorta issues, i forsee them getting worse and worse till banging the dash no longer helps.

well i would think that banging on the dash cannot be good for the guage cluster, so I would refrain from doing that until you find a way to repair the HUD, or just deal without it, because that is indeed what the cluster in intended for.  HUD is nice, but if you keep beating those electronics don't be surprised if both of them crap out on ya.

Does anyone have a spare HUD unit for out friend here?  Maybe just to swap and see?

Did we ever get a FAQ or a "how to" on how to take the dash pad out so I can work on my Hud?

To take the dashpad off, remove the two screws above your gauge cluster, then there is another screw at the top of the glovebox you have to remove.
Then, just lift up on the front of the dashpad and pull it towards you, it will pop off out of its clips.
Have fun!

oh iv taken the dash off, its easy, i had to find out the hard way my nice speakers wont go in the dash, so i had to put them in the doors, wich was alot more time consuming. U dont have to hit it hard for it to work again

I need to clean mine.  Never done it.  Is the whole unit an assembly, or does the tan plastic come off / is it swappable?  So if I pulled one from a j/y grey STE would it work??

I haven't looked that closely to see if the tan casing easily comes off or not.. but I do still have a tan one hanging around from my TGP. if anyone's interested shoot me a pm.

Ryan. Looking at the HUD grille you should see a clip on it. Pry it up with a small screwdriver. Then lift the grille. It's hinged I believe. Now you have easy access to the glass. It's as easy as it sounds.

Yep. To clean it, simply pull up on the release latch holding the grill and then you've exposed the glass.  FWIW, the tan casing does come off of the HUD, but you'll have to remove the HUD from the dash first. Here are a few pictures I took back in '05 of my spare TGP hud w/ the cover removed.

^That's a piece of plexiglass I cut up and threw in there. My spare HUD came with a broken piece of glass. :icon_redface: I still haven't tested the HUD w/ the plexi in place to see if it even shows the display properly(I'll test that out soon).
