Title: A few questions.
Post by: splhooligan on June 08, 2007, 05:32:37 PM
I'm new here on the forums as you can see and fairly new to the 3.1 turbo world.  I have a few questions i wanted to get off my chest in regards to the turbo 3.1 and my Ste.
1.  Is it safe running 12psi on these motors( yes, i have the top gun 160 chip)
2.  The other night i was doing a 0-60 test (with just a stop watch) and i couldn't get anything under a 10 second.  It feels pretty quick and runs great I'm not sure if it was just the weather or what(hot, windy).  Could weather play that big of roll in how the car performs.
Thanks!

edit:mods are, top gun 160 and no cat.

12psi is def safe, thats what a lot of people are running. at least 1 was at 13.5psi. 12 will max your stock fuel system though

12psi is plenty safe, the top gun chip has the engine running overly rich. About that 10 second 0-60, are you having someone else time it on a stop watch or are you timing it yourself? It's probably just the weather and stop-watching doesn't workout too accurately most of the time anyways. My naturally aspirated 3.1 Grand Prix will do 0-60 in about 10.XX to 11 seconds in this weather for what it's worth  Your TGP should still run pretty quickly even though it's hot out...

Im timing it my self with a stop watch, although its not the safest haha.  I was also looking at the airfliter which is a k&n right on the turbo and it is filthy. So im going to pick up a new one of those this next thursday and see what happens.

Unless the K&N is smashed up where you would have unfiltered air(holes in it), don't toss it. They're cleanable/reusable. You can buy a cleaning kit from almost any auto parts chain for around $10 that will clean and reoil it a bunch of times.

It has some smashed area as well as the hose clamp has cut through some of the rubber. :icon_cry:

i can confirm 18psi on a stock motor but larger turbo is indeed safe

Check out K&N filters on www.ajusa.com , they usually have cheaper prices on them than other vendors. There's a "stickied" thread at the top of this Performance section that lists some of the common K&N filters we run on these cars. Also, you should pick up a t-bolt style hose clamp to hold the K&N filter on. The typical worm gear drive clamps bite into the rubber on the filter and will eat a hole in it if you tighten them down pretty snug. The t-bolt clamps look like this.

If you mean max it out by going lean you are wrong bud...sorry. ;)

These cars with a stock chip or Jeff M chip will run sub-11 and 10:1 at wide open throttle. The stock fuel injectors and the stock turbo will work no matter what. I have a few custom performance chips that are running 14psi with a better intercooler and no signs of knock (not the right way to tune) and plenty of fuel with the stock system.

splhooligan if you are barely hitting 10 sec 0-60 and your tires are not smoking off the car from your launch then most likely you have some issues. You say you have a Jeff M chip. Do you have a GOOD boost gauge? Not some CheckerAuto cheng shin made POS. If you can have someone look at your tailpipes when you are hard on the throttle...are you belching black or blue smoke? Do you have a hard stumble when the boost hits?

If you have at least 10 psi_g, you have traction, and no smoke out the tailpipe, then you should be at least an 8 second 0-60.

The car is running fine as far as i can tell.  Last night i took it out with alot better weather and it felt alot quicker.  Im going to get an autometer boost gauge as soon as my mbc arrives. Thanks for the help!

Since I have been introduced to ISSPro, I will never buy another AutoMeter anything in my life! I think AutoMeter has outsourced their stuff to China or something. Half of their gauges I have come across in the last few months has been inaccurate or it hangs high. Example...a temp gauge on the mini-sprint car I sponsor was showing 250*F during the race. My driver pulled off in fear it was actually overheating. With a laser pointer temp gauge we could not find a single point above 170*F. Two hours later the temp gauge was still sitting at 230*F. The next morning it was down to 180*F. By the way...it was a money race and he most likely could have taken first place without issue. :icon_evil:

So what kind of difference will i see with 12psi as opposed to the stock boost?

I also think my gauges may be off a tad bit, my tach shows that my car is shifting at 7k at wot. :icon_eek:

You said the you have the topgun chip already, so you should be around ~11psi already. ;)

sweet so what would cause my tach to read like 7k at wot before it shifts.  I wasnt aware that the topgun chip made your boost increase...thats cool.

The tachs and speedometers in these cars are usually off by quite a bit. My tach is off, but only reads about ~200-300rpms higher than it should whereas my speedometer is off by more than a few mph(it gets worse as you go faster).

if you need to know more about your topgun chip, just go to Jeff M site http://www.turbograndprix.com/driveability_and_performance_chip.htm

<-----pwn3d. where is my misunderstanding? i thought more than that would require better flowing injectors and a new fuel pump to keep up with the fuel needed?
