Hey everyone, i just tried firing my motor, brand new with 3100 top end. Here is a pretty big problem: the check engine light is on when motor runs but i cant get any codes! I ground A and B with ign on, and get just a solid check engine light. I can only get it to run for a couple seconds, with my foot flat out on the pedal... take it off the pedal it dies. The rev is verrry low and the smoke is a little black.
Im using 30 lb injectors and a chip that my friend put a lot of thought and time into. I dont have a fuel pressure guauge but it does spray out. I did a compression check on a couple of cylinders and got 180 which is right. All the plugs but 1 were black so i cleaned them off, they are AR472 plugs by the way gapped to .035. The one plug was really clean. maybe one of the injectors arent getting a connection? O well its pouring rain now so im done for now. Any help is appreciated, thanks Ike
First thing I would try is put the old chip in and make sure it still does the same thing, Don't tell me you sacraficed your old one. :icon_sad:
Next, sounds like you got the gas just don't have the spark. could be coils, IM, computer, crank sensor. Make sure you didn't pinch the wires from the CS down by the AC brkt.
Good luck
Jud
Thanks Jud,
I checked a wire from each coil pack and they definately have spark. I took the plugs back out and they were soaked with gas. i had to keep it jumped off my buddys car. It just cranks forever and sometimes acts like it wants to fire , I think its getting too much gas?? I had it running earlier today for the first time and the smoke was black it barely ran. now it wont start at all. It makes wierd poping noises and sometimes pings like it wants to fire. I thought i might have mixed up the fuel lines but i just checked.
Would anybody know why my check engine light doesnt work when i try run diagnostic?
First thing I thought of was maybe your Crank Position Sensor was bad, but you said it did eventually fire. I'm not sure what your chip is programmed to do, but you can always check your fuel injector fuses, passenger side fuse block under the hood...this would cause it to not fire, or run on 3 injectors, depending on if they're both bad. 30 lb injectors? My money's on too much fuel.
Then again, I don't know. Just a few random thoughts.
Ok you have spark and gas. Is the spark at the correct time. Put a timing light on it and see.
Did you have the cam out? What did you do for pushrods? How did you determin the length? Not knowing exactly what you did makes it hard to troubleshoot.
Did you try your old chip?
Jud
I did have the cam out, the machine shop installed it . The pushrods i measured and have enough lifter preload.. i dont think they are wrong. the old chip is on its way back. I have about 5 volts from the a-b ports but no flashing check engine. Coil packs and engine grounds are working. How do i use a timing light if the motor dosnt run? What do u think about not having 3400 ICm and coil packs? thanks
The light will flash enough to see the timing marks by just cranking. Your old ecm will work for sure up to 2001 after that I don't know.
