Title: Headlight mod?
Post by: TLOC on September 28, 2007, 09:31:58 PM
Does anyone recall a link to a write up for a headlight mod that makes all 4 lights come on when you turn on the brights?
Thought I saw it here or Car Domain but I can't find it now! :icon_mad:   :damnit1:

Ok I don't own a TGP I'm just here to see whats going on to help my neighbor Jimmy with his car. I am a mechanic and like to do electrical work the most. I think I can help figure this out for you. First I need to know some things. (Jimmy's car isn't around to look at). From your post it sounds like when you flpi to high beam the low beams turn off is this correct? Look at both the low beam bulbs and high beam bulbs and let me know how many filiments are in each bulb? Also what is your reason to want them all on? My Dodge turns off the low beams when I flip to high beam and I don't like that either. My car uses bulbs with just one filiment in each bulb and I have been unable to find 2 filiment bulbs to fit in the low beams.

While waiting for that info let me give you some. If the reason for wanting all 4 on is you don't have enough light there are some other things to consider. On the Dodges it is very common with all the wire the power runs throught to get to the bulbs and the under size wire used on these cars it is very common to find the voltage getting to the bulbs is 1 or 2 volts lower then battery voltage. Adding a relay and powering the bulbs right off the battery with heavier gauge wire gets the light up enough for most of us. It also allows us to run the higher 85 or 100 watt bulbs (factory size is usually 55 watt) with out melting the harness or switches.

Another thing to consider is if you plan on jumping the low beams while powering it all on the high beam circuit you will need to run them off of a relay with heavier wire. Lets say the biulbs are 55 watt. 2 bulbs at 55 watt is 110 watt. Using ohms law that comes out to the pair of bulbs using 7.85 amps if the charging system is running at 14 volt. Jumpimg the 2 extra bulbs will double that to 15.7 amps. Way too much for the factory wiring. Relays can fix this very easy.

If you get a chance is wouldn't hurt to back probe both of the lights one at a time to see what they are getting and check it to what battery voltage at the time of checking this. It is important that the lights still be hooked up and lite while checking this the load can alter the results.

also, the heat from both bulbs running could destroy the headlight housing

I don't think heat should be an issue on a TGP with the glass lenses. I'm running 100 watt bulbs in my wifes mini van and the entire housing is plastic and have had no issues. I've had the 100 watt ones in for about a year now and they replaced a set of 85 watt lights that were in for 4 years. I wish I had glass lenses.

from what I understand it's just a simple re-wire. but as for being bad for the housings. it's true if you leave them on 24-7 you'll melt the backings around the bulbs as any other plastic headlight would. but to have them on for a few hours at night while driving around I don't see a problem with that.

there used to be a module available called "KC Highlights" which was a relay box that piggy backed on your lighting wires. They ran about $30 and were available at parts store but i haven seen them for years.

you could always go to radio shack, buy some diodes, and put connect the high beam wire to the low beam wire with the diode being bias towards the low beam wire, and there ya go... easiest way to do it...

Here's a link to that kit. ;) You could buy the wiring/relay/etc. locally, but having a bundled kit might be advantageous for some. Other companies make similar kits as well.

I think I may just go with some HID's insted, we placed HID's on our MRAPs here in Iraq and they are awesome.  Will need to get the glass lenses though.

HID's are pretty awesome. My mother has a '07 Nissan Maxima SL and the HID's on it are insanely bright. On bright, you can see the entire road + everything in the ditches on both sides and all the way up into the trees on the side of the road.
