I have read most every thread in here but need a question answered. Is the Garrett GT2871R part# 743347-2 a direct bolt in replacement for my nearly dead T-25? According to what I see advertised and what I have read in your threads it is. Flanges appear to be the same. Also I am assuming the injectors will need to be changed to get the benefit from this turbo. I would greatly appreciate any advice as I can't drive the car now. :icon_confused:
Yes, I believe that is the biggest direct bolt-on turbocharger. As for the injectors, I'm not sure if running stock injectors will hurt it, but newer injectors will not hinder it.
Oil/coolant lines will need to be made, and a the O2 sensor will have to be moved onto the downpipe.
The gt 3076 is the largest, about 75 more HP available than the 2871 plus the colder air at the same boost. Unless your drag racing it's over kill for a street machine. But man does it give you some awwwwesome top end power, like passing gear look out. :icon_biggrin:
The stock injectors are not big enough to support the likes of a 2871 what ever you do to get the fuel in. 30# injectors will work good provided you raise the fuel pressure or tune the chip for more ms open time. Just putting larger injectors won't do it because the ecm will just scale back the open time.
Any of the gt series turbos will require some serious tuning or you will definitely have detonation. :icon_sad:
I would guess you could run the 2871 at 6-7# wiythout exploding your motor, but what fun is that. :icon_lol:
I'm so glad this thread showed up when it did, I'm also thinking of going with the 2871 as well, when my car gets back from the body shop. I'm still sorda new to the whole turbo concept .TGPvsTll is the guy thats been helping me mechanically ,hes telling me to skip the whole GT series turbos and go with a T series . But see After installing the T series I don't think I'm going to like the lag that these turbos produce. I'm so use to punching it off the line but would love to have alittle more power. :flamingdevil:So sleperred are you telling me that if I went with the 3076 ,I will get the best of both worlds
Just saying that the 3076 will give you the most power at the lowest boost pressure. I might produce the same #'s of air at 10# as the 2871 does at 12 or 13 #'s The lower you can keep the psi the easier it is to tune the motor and its safer. Dead stop low end power will be efected by either turbo. I go about 10' before the tires lite up, foot brake different story.
If your going stop light to stop light get the smaller GT 28r or the DP. If you want to race the 1/8 or 1/4 get one of the two big ones. Oh and don't forget the biggest drag radials you can fit in the fender well along with rear strut blockers.

ANYONE TRIED TO REMOVE THE TURBO WHILE THE ENGINE IS IN THE CAR? i HAVE LOOKED AT IT AND CAN NOT SEE HOW TO GET TWO OF THE BOLTS OUT (ONE IS AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE TURBINE OUTLET AND THE OTHER IS ON THE INSIDE BOTTOM OF THE CROSSOVER TO TURBINE INLET). I TRIED TO REMOVE TO OF THE EASIER CROSSOVER BOLTS AFTER LUBING WITH PB BLASTER AND ATTEMPTED TO REMOVER THEM. ON OF THEM CAME MOST OF THE WAY OUT AND THEN STOPPED. WHEN I LOOKED AT THE THREADS THAT HAD ALREADY COME OUT THEY WERE STRIPPED. THE WHOLE BOLT HEAD STARTED TO TWIST ON THE OTHER BOLT AND I QUIT SINCE I AM PULLING THE MOTOR ANYWAY. :damnit1: I CANNOT IMAGINE REMOVING THIS TURBO WITH THE ENGINE IN THE CAR. :icon_mad: ALSO MY TURBO ISULATION WRAP FELL APART. ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO GET ANOTHER ONE?
You have to use a very short, stubby wrench to get the bottom bolts out of the turbo (at least thats how I did mine). The day before I worked on mine, I sprayed all bolts down with WD40 and everything was fairly decent to work on.
Trust me, my friend, I've been where you are now...twice! It sucks, but like Nick said, use a small, stubby wrench and it is COMPLETELY possibly to remove it with the engine in. I'm proof. This car requires patience.....tons of it.
I fucking hate removing our turbo. It could be much much worse... but some of the downpipe bolts are just in the shittiest location. I don't even care about the awkward reach-under, it's just that they're so damn close to the pipe that it's nearly impossible to use anything but an open end wrench and it takes forever.
With the horror stories I hear about how hard the turbo is to take out, I am so glad I paid someone else to do it..
It's a lot simpler if you take the turbo off the xover and put a board or something under it to get it raised up. You have to pull the break heat shield.

You are definitely right on the patience part. I was a GM dealer technician for 5 years and graduated GM ASEP school. I cut my teeth on Northstars and QUAD 4's. I have seen nothing in all my car fixing days as difficult to work on as this car. Nothing is easy to do!!!
However in the end I am sure it will be well worth it. Thanks for the encouragement, guys. :icon_wink:
When i removed my turbo, i personally thought putting it back in was alot harder than removal. With some pb, and wobble end sockets i got it out fairly easy, it was intalling it, all the bolts wanted to bind up and ruin thier threads.

Jimmy I still think a T3 will not give you too much lag. I have a stock T3 on my 2.2 TIII and my 2.2 is close to being 2/3's of the size of your 3.1 and my lag is not bad. The problem you will have is getting traction when it does hit. Plus with 8 months of summer here it will help in not heating up the air charge as much. 12lbs of boost with a T25 will be hotter then 12lbs of boost with a T3. With what I have seen here on this site more of the TGP guys are up north and don't have to deal with all the heat we have down here.

Here this post is saying the same thing colder air at the same boost. We have way to much heat already down here.
As far as the other subject in this post. Jimmy and I haven't had an issue removing his turbo. We have had his off a few times and didn't seem to have any issues and it was straight forward to do. I can see it being a little difficult if mechanics isn't what pays your bills.

i have a gt2876, and i am only running 8# with stock tuning and injectors for now. i bought mine with the opt. .86 a/r turbine outlet. it doesnt lag bad at all, by 2200 rpm i am at 8 psi. i recommend that when you change your turbo, you add a BOV. if you dont you wont be able to keep the charge pipe or vacuum manifold on your throttle body. as far as the dp bolts, use a half moon wrench, it will help. and also when i did the swap i drilled and tapped the turbine housing for my o2 sensor. try to post pics of the finished product. if you take the plenum off it makes the swap much easier.
